not sure if this is passive aggressive or serious but ill just leave this here:
professional: engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur.

Not even main occupation. I havent seen anyone make any money in this game. Sure, some guys might win a division or even Invite. But what does that really net them after league fees and time spent?

That tells me who they play for, not who they are. From what I understand div 1 is under prem. I don't understand how that makes them "professional"

This is not true, we won 500 Euros in Wireplay Highlander, my Engineer can now afford new tyres with his cut of the money. I have now finally made a total of £150 from this game after investing thousands of hours, I esitimate I will turn a profit circa 2037. So long as Yanks and Aussies stop attending summer i-series so I don't dish out anymore money, selfish bastards.

Also people misunderstand the "Professional" aspect. The purpose of this event is more than likely to gain exposure for TF2 on a larger scale, using the term "pros" quite loosely here, the event is supposed to highlight to the wider competitive community that our scene has dedicated players who invest time into this game with the aim of winning. A professional may mean something different, but if you're a casual player of any games and want to test the ability of a high level TF2 player, the term "pro" can be used.
Besides it is not as if we can afford to fly Clockwork or Stefen out to Dreamhack.

AyRSince when has the word "pro" only meant professional (aka someone who makes money off it, or does it as "their main paid occupation")? Pretty sure a lot of people use the word to describe someone of high skill level at anything!
In terms of the competition itself, what is it? MGE/Bball/etc? Or is it more of a team vs team thing?
This time we do not have enough space and hardware for a proper team tournament. Scout MGE 1v1 is the competition of choice.
Also, I would not lay too much weight onto the word "pro". You know how the media always exaggerates...

Scout MGE might be easier for newcomers to pickup than soldier, but it's not going to be very impressive to watch.
Make sure you get the Saints guys to play some "exhibition" soldier against each other at least!

Aren't people freaking out a little bit too much about it? Don't they use the word "pro" pretty liberally with the highlander vs. 6s competitions anyway?
