KillamothVideo games are fun. Why can't we have fun without talking about issues that aren't immediately present in them?
Because, frankly, it's a medium that can be respected and evolve... so long as you don't block out every opportunity to challenge trends, tropes, and the framework of the medium with "it's a video game, just play it."

video games are a pretty shitty medium for artistic expression, and the structure doesn't exist for them to be judged critically or in any way that goes beyond newspaper movie reviews.
On top of that, the way people try to make video games art is by making them movies with interactive portion. Celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship of a video game is perfectly possible, but that skill isn't shown through a movie script. Games like Journey actually tried to be art by utilizing things that were unique to video games to achieve it's purpose. Something like morrowind is great, but I wouldn't call it an example of video games as art since it's pretty shitty in the video games part. Mario 64 could be art, since it's incredibly well put together, and could not exist in it's form in any other medium. It doesn't rely extensively on cut-scenes or text to create the tension and drama of the story. It relies on well crafted game mechanics to build up to the end of the game.

That's great. Everybody has their own reasons to play games and that's fine. But it's silly to act like all games are good for is fun, and it's silly to downplay attempts to challenge the medium because "it's just a video game."
