Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are recovering from all the holidays treats! I promised you another post at the end of December and well here it is. It has been hard to keep going during the holidays as people have been away ect but we will kick it up again in the New Year. I don’t have much to report other than the community now has an important task to do.
I am asking the community for their voice on the amount of money you are willing to pay for a pay to play league in CEVO in the next coming up season. Keep in mind that this format is for this season coming up as things may change until the league gets stable and the community is 100% supporting it which is our ultimate goal. You will be voting for the set amount (flat fee) per player in every division for the next season. When voting please remember that the goal is to have a league that is 100% supported from the TF2 community with a growing prize pot and possible lans in the future.
Also keep in mind that the ESEA Fees for this season were the following
INVITE $60.00 with no premium
MAIN $25.83 fee with lowest prem option
IM $20.83 fee with lowest prem option
OPEN $15.83 Fee with lowest prem option
As promised we will hold another community CEVO meeting to finalize plans, give you updates and answer any questions you may have in January. The exact time of the community meeting will be announced as soon as people get settled in from the holiday season. If you have any questions or concerns about this vote it may be best to keep them for the community meeting where CEVO can answer them directly.
Pay to Play Vote Here: http://strawpoll.me/923691
In addition, if your team has not registered on the CEVO website to show support for your team in the next season, please do so here http://cevo.com/forums/topic/5216/team-fortress-2/show-of-interest-from-season-4-tf2-teams/
Enjoy the rest of the holiday season and I will see you all in the NEW YEAR!!
EDIT: The majority of the money will go to the prize pool. CEVO will answer specifics in the community meeting.

How much of the fee would go towards prize pool?

adding on to this, would it be reasonable that we could get some transparency on where each dollar is going to go? knowing this information would be helpful for me, personally.

If you have a free to play league there wont be a prize pot that people will be willing to play for. Nothing is for free and the money needs to come from the community as there are no sponsors. If you want a league that you pay fees for and have a say on what the league looks like ect. Then this is your chance. You cannot have your cake and eat it too as they say...;)

$10 for open
Are you guys doing a 'league fee' AND a 'premium fee' thing? Also is it a 1 time payment or something that we have to pay monthly in order to play on the team?

Just a straight league fee for the whole season, per player, per team.

I'm not sure about how the poll is worded. It would seem that asking "how much are you willing to pay" would elicit better responses than "how much would you prefer to pay", since pretty much everyone would rather pay the least amount of money.
Still, it's good to see some follow-up on this issue. Thanks for your great work as always!

In fact, it's actually better to word it like "Would you be willing to pay $XX?" The way you suggested would still be biased toward the lowest price.

Obviously Cevo won't become a F2P league if all these ESEA players are switching over, but I don't think a F2P division could hurt. Wouldn't even have to be prizes for it.

Because no one wants to play for a league we've never used before and there's no guarantee that anyone will actually pay to play in. If it's a choice between this and ESEA, I'd probably pick ESEA for being a better guarantee of people actually joining

Yes Indeed. I blame it on the holiday eggnog and rum! I think people should get the general drift but yes it could have been worded much better. Oooops! CHEERS!!! ;)

I'm not even sure why you're doing a poll for this. Most businesses don't usually ask the customers how much they want to pay -- they put a price out there and adjust over time, or do market research. In this case market research would be extremely easy...so a poll just seems lazy. Probably the most useful thing to come out of it will be "how many people are at least mildly interested in CEVO".

this poll is market research
this poll is market research
not when it's done like this lol
you're biasing the data too. what if people were willing to pay more or weren't willing to pay at all? one hypothesis that I have is that most NA TF2 players aren't willing to pay to be in two different leagues. I could be wrong. But I guarantee you that this poll won't answer that question.

Yea, this isn't how a business would normally do market research. But I doubt CEVO has any economists on payroll.

CEVO should be able to figure out their own prices. I'm worried about a league that can't even figure out something as basic as this without community feedback.
There are literally only two other leagues out there. One charges nothing. The other has publicly released its pricing. Figure out the cost of creating the league, hiring staff for support, development costs, putting on a LAN, whatever. Then decide if you want to incur a loss, break even, or make a profit over X length of time. Figure out your business plan, and determine how player fees play into that. CEVO already stated that they make money not off the players but from sponsors like Red Bull or whatever. Why they're charging us I have no idea. Maybe they think we care about prize pools. They might want to charge us to supply a prize pool.
That's where market research comes in. Ask the players if they care about prize pools or not.
This isn't that hard for a proper business to figure out. If you want the players to make up arbitrary prices that is just going to be a waste of time. People always want to pay the least possible but might pay more if they see value. Polling prices like this is dumb.

i really don't care how much I pay as long as it's less than ESEA. If it's more the everyone is going to go back to esea

We of course can easily figure it out Mr.Slin. This is not rocket science. The idea here is that the CEVO league is for the community to have a "voice" and not just being told on how things are going to happen. Not all decisions will be made by the community but at least we are trying. We run the risk of the majority taking the lower price, yes. However, if there are not enough teams that register with a lower price per player then the prize pot will be lower. So if the community wants a bigger prize pot then pay more. Its a pretty simple idea. I think we deserve a little more respect in knowing that this is not a formula on a business practice but simply a way for the community to have some say on what is happening. Isn't it the whole idea that people are tired of asking for things we never get or even have a chance of getting? Let's remember why CEVO is here and why I am supporting it and putting my efforts forward. It is simply to try and support a league that the community wants to support rather then being told too.

I understand getting our opinion on some things but I can't figure out what was going through your mind when you made this poll? What information were you trying to gain?
Say 80% of participants vote for $15. Do you go back to CEVO and say "people only find CEVO to be half as valuable as ESEA?" Say 80% of participants voted for $25. Do you go back to CEVO and say "ok so a full season of ESEA open costs $31 and we determined that most of the people interested in playing TF2 with us only want to pay $25." ??? Almost half of the teams in ESEA pay more than that, and if you assume that all intermediate players and above want to play invite (a broad assumption) then almost half of ESEA would be willing to pay double the highest value that you put in the poll.
I feel like you're making the decision for us on pricing and it puzzles me as that is counter to what you are saying in your posts about us making the decisions.

Like I'm scared of what you're going to tell the CEVO guys when you analyze these poll results.
Like I'm scared of what you're going to tell the CEVO guys when you analyze these poll results.
I am not certain what the disconnect here is, or why there is a need to be so adversarial, but let's look at it this way..
CEVO is planning a TF2 league, but the crux is, the teams simply need to actively participate to show continued interest. Recall that CEVO has languished in obscurity for a number of years and the added expense to support a league (which is a lot more then most people can piece together honestly, especially if there are legitimate prize pots at play) is not insignificant.
So the poll is really there to check a basic commitment level of the teams, if they all go for the lowest, that's fine.
So from a business standpoint, the goal is probably around 40 teams if I recall from the reading, to set something up like ESEA would not be a single season commitment, but a fairly expensive thing to spend the time to develop, so the business decision at play is really to find out if the community is willing to commit to the league to warrant that expense. In business, it's called testing to see if you have a market worth pursuing. So the ball really is in the TF2 communities court from here on out (where it always has been to be honest).
Do you want to continue with ESEA and the status quo, or try something different. So finding out if the community only wants to spend 15 dollars is not a huge deal. I think people will figure out the intent of the poll just fine. What it CAN impact is the commitment of resources and the speed of the discussed Stats systems, demos and so forth.
