Valve also sat on MVM for a couple years and slowly releasing little snippets and pictures coming up before the release.
Valve does not seem to rush out big updates. It is Valve Time after all.

Wow, I looked at those pics and literally said "Holy shit!" out loud. That looks amazing. I wonder if the physics have improved as well. If this is Source2 for a port, I can't wait to see what HL3 will look like.

It's amazing that their business strategy of "do everything really slowly" hasn't put them out of business. Steam was an amazing stroke of luck for them, and hopefully they use their financial success to make better products rather than "resting on their laurels" and taking things slow.

They are not a publicly traded company run by guys that count beans and answer to salty CEOs and Hedge Funds. They have uhm a lot of money and can do what they want when they want. For as much as people hate on Gabe, that guy is a fricken bauce and runs the show with his eyes on the gamers and quality products. If that means people have to wait for an excellent product instead of having some crappy rushed version pushed out by a company like EA then so be it.

I don't think Valve "sat" on MVM at all. You have to understand, the TF2 team is essentially five people, and MVM is like a complete game in its own right (albeit, one that uses existing 3d models and art assets) and that shit takes time to make, even for a full team. I'm pretty sure they just sat there plunking away at it for a couple of years before releasing it, because thats what you do when you make a game.
