yo whenever i log onto steam it says i have 8 messages but they're all from [unknown] and they never go away what the fuck is happening to me
Hey, same problem here.
If you click on the profile picture of the [unknown] you can actually see the user!
I have no solution though, even blocking the user or sending him a message does nothing :/
I think it's a strange Steam bug that will be fixed eventually. (Valve time...)

this happened to me when someone sent me a message while i was offline, then before i viewed the message i deleted them from friends. For me, when I re-added them and messaged them again and then closed the chat, clicking the message removed it.
I've had this before with a scrap bot. If you readd the person that has messaged you, you can read the messages. At which point the 8 notifications will go away. You can then remove the user and no more notification. The hard part is finding out who the user is that has removed you after leaving you messages.
Hope this helps, best of luck.

If you get this you can go to this and should be able to see it, but it's most likely phishing links.

I've had 2 steam notifications for comments that don't exist on photos of mine for like a year. Any idea on if I can clear them?
what you have to do is be able to open the chat box so that it says unknown user. After, you have to block them then log out then in of steam. Try to open the chat box again and then unblock the person when you get the pop up. Should display the message and get rid of notifications

Do this^^^^
Had the same issue. Someone messaged me whilst I was offline, then removed me from friends. The only way to display the message and thus remove the notification was through using the webchat.

This. Fixed it for me the other night. When you restart steam and try to open the messages it prompts you to unblock them then the chat opens properly and you can report/block/unfriend
