I think the thought behind that is you can jump around for better positioning without losing 30-40 some health with each jump.

But you only have a shotgun. It'd be stupid as hell if you could take good positions and then have actual rockets to fall back on for 0 hp, but you don't.

every single blackbox soldier i've played against in dm takes height advantage and just ran away while having infinite hp, especially on maps like granary and turbine and snakewater lol

No, of course not. But being able to do say a double jump to the other side of the map and still have full health is nice.

it's more that the rockets don't deal damage to enemies. then you have to kill them with just the shotgun, forcing practice with it.

or maybe it's just the luxury of not taking damage from your rocket jumps because you're not gunna use your rockets anyways

True, but using the default RL in DM and practicing shotgun can give a more realistic situation you would have in a game as you'll have both. That 30hp rocket jump could be the 30 hp you need to live, so it makes the urge to hit shotgun shots even more.

It's an excessive ban, it's his call ultimately, but it isn't particularly harmful to have people have rocket jumper.
And it's DM, hp isn't really a thing to be worried about (you get it back as you go and instant respawn), it's hitting shots. So why would it be harmful to get rid of your primary to get better at shotgun aim? You could always whip out the real rocket launcher in a pinch, but that's not the point of it.

When somebody can answer that, I'd fold on it.

It seems to me that the ban stems more from the concern that people can and have used it troll and waste a slot in a dm server.

Because most people will use it to be gigantic idiots, not only taking a server slot from someone who actually wants to practice their DM, but also wasting the time of everyone else in the server.
