videogamer life is a hard one ;(
After nearly failing college because of it, video games are not everything. Do your work and the play games, they will be there when you're done with your work.
Think of it this way, is he really doing it to harm you? But just talk to him about it. Make a schedule for priorities and what not
Tell your father that you don't want to argue with him, but he you feel he is being overly protective and controlling. Try calmly explaining why it is that you love playing TF2 in terms that might put your parents minds at ease.
Let them know that you understand school is your main priority, but gaming is something you are passionate about and that it is an important part of your life.
They probably just see it in their narrow view of videogames, but you might be able to help them understand that you are playing as part of a team, working towards a goal of being the best team you can be, competing against other teams across the continent, solving problems together in high pressure situations whilst maintaining a certain level of dexterity.
Even if they totally dismiss what you say, you will still have said it and they will know how you feel on the issue.
As for your sister, you should probably just give her a hug every day. Give her some attention and let her know that you love her.
Nah. I'm talking shit. You fucked bro.

FerskinI even tried saying how I am one of the most smartest kids in my high school,
I had to point it out
I had to point it out
SnowyIn high school there's more than enough time to prepare for school and play hours upon hours of video games every day. Don't pretend your parents are forcing you to choose between TF2 and studying; you can easily do both. You just don't want to study. Can't fix a problem if you refuse to acknowledge it.
That being said, be nicer to your parents. They only want the best for you, even though they're not sure how to go about getting you there.
Don't listen to the idiots telling you to move out. You're nowhere near independent enough to do so. It'll only hurt your family, and in the end, yourself.
This is a great post.
But in the original post, I really will not believe you have no time to study except at night. Most high schools get done around 2 or 3 PM, which gives you at least ~5 hours to study. You don't even have to study for the full ~5 hours, either. Maybe study for like 2-3 hours, then do whatever. However, if there is truly no chance to study except during the time you want to play TF2, then the answer is obvious. Don't get me wrong, studying can be very dull, but it's one of those things where if you end up not performing well enough, you'll regret it.
You can't really be angry at your dad, either. I mean, think about it. You didn't do well on a few tests, and you even just admitted to us that you can't find time to study because you're playing TF2. He wants you to do well in school so you can have a respectable GPA, therefore getting you potential scholarships and getting into a good college. Once you graduate highschool, you can't undo anything that you've already done. You might as well do the best you can, because what you do there can and will impact your future openings in colleges / jobs.
R3VoltYo, do we have the same parents or something? My family is Vietnamese and I get this shit all the time. Used to play ESEA Open and I'd have to leave a couple scrims early and missed others. Left one match early as well. Parents thought I was addicted, even though I was getting B+ to B- in school. Then my grades started dropping, my parents said from video games. It wasn't though, it was from all the stress of my parents arguing with me and shit. Fucking hell, I already have gray hair, AND I'M 16.
Anywho, I quit playing TF2, I only play it casually. Just don't fucking listen to your parents. They're lunatics and so are mine. They REALLY, like REALLY, do not understand commonsense nor do they want to. Here's a story about logic and commonsense. I was about 180 lbs last summer and I wanted to lose weight. I went and lost weight. I weigh 140 now which is a good range for the height/age I'm at. My mom thinks I'm TOO SKINNY. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? LMAO, it takes a lot for me to not just burst out about how utterly ridiculous their train of thought is. (Sorry for the reference, but) They are like an autistic train; trains have multiple paths they can take. The best one is the one that rides you to the next station, then there are MULTIPLE paths that are blocked off. Guess which one they take? Yeah...
So, for all intents and purposes, just ignore them. You know better than them. Focus on school, show them that you can do EVERYTHING and that you don't need them. Once you get where you need, spit on their shoes and walk. It is too taxing to argue with them. Hope all goes well for yah mate.
Ferskin, please don't listen to this post. Because if you really believe you are definitely, unquestionably more knowledgeable than your parents and that you should "just ignore them," you are fucking sorely mistaken. But I was pretty naive when I was 16 too, haha.
I don't think I can name a single person I know who completely neglected their parents and are currently successful today.

Dont move out so you can play video games. However, realize your parents might not have a basic understanding of spare time / realistic expectaions.
If your family can't accept you having hobbies, you should probably lay off the hobbies until you can support yourself and do what you like with your spare time.
Without being confrontational, you should ask them what they expect from you so maybe you won't be accused of being possessed by a demon. Let them know that you listen to them, but tell them you need a set amount of boundaries to act within so you can avoid dumb arguments about school vs videogames.
Also let them know your sister has a tendency to be antagonistic to get you in trouble.
If they ignore you / are still unreasonable / still favor your sister over you, you probably have shitty parents, and should see if you can find some external support from school counseling or maybe an internet support forum like: http://www.reddit.com/r/raisedbynarcissists/

Pretty much what Fragile said. Its just videogames bro, doing well in school is astronomically more important then being good at any videogame. Use media as a means of escape but don't let it overtake the more important things in life like school, work, and relationships.
Communicate with your dad too. Try and take a step back and look at it from his point of view. Honestly he probably wants you to do well in life like most every parent and cares enough to take action where he sees fit. Try and make it clear to him that you are capable by doing well in school and actually do it. Communicate, communicate, communicate.
It's highschool too. It might seem like its ezmode smooth sailing, but you are going to get skills in highschool that you'll use for the rest of your life. Most important ones are building good study habits and being able to balance work and hobbies. And that's all videogames really are, a hobby. They should NEVER take priority over important irl shit.

how are you one of the smartest people in your class if you're getting C's?
FerskinI'm just thinking you shouldn't even be talking about addiction you faggot.
I'm ready to deck him in the balls, but I don't because of respect for him.
chill brah you need to prove to him that you can handle playing games on the weekdays too. also fuck your sister unless shes older than you and doesnt give a fuck, try to earn her respect by being the older sibling and shit.

I'm guessing you never heard of trying at the last weeks of school when you know you will get a good enough average at high school, good enough that if you fail you can a still pass and go to the next grade. Fragile, thanks for the advice and to others also, made up my mind I'll just focus in studies and just not play competitive until Im out of school.

What's with the terrible advice in here? Move out? Try to explain to his dad that video games are important? Talk to a counselor? None of this shit makes sense.
This is high school. You should be doing much better than a high 70. That's why your dad cut off your computer time; not because he hates you, not because he thinks you aren't doing enough homework, but because he ALSO knows that you should be doing MUCH better than a high 70 in high school. You're only 16 so you're probably a sophomore, meaning your course load is probably piss easy unless you opted for some advanced placement courses or college placement courses (and if that's the case, you should ABSOLUTELY be prioritizing those over video games). It's pretty ridiculous to get anything less than a B in a non-AP or ACP test because that just means you didn't try studying for it at all.
High school is not hard at all and I think your dad knows that, so he's upset that you pulled a "strong 70" (which is nothing to be proud of) instead of getting the grades that he knows you could be getting. Don't be angry at your dad. He just wants you to be performing at your best, and he thinks that doing all of your studying/homework in the morning (which I'm guessing means you lose sleep) and doing nothing but playing video games in the evening is severely hindering your ability to perform as well as he thinks you should be.
Quit your internet video game team because it's not important at all in the long run. You can still play video games, and even just play pubs in TF2 from time to time, but committing yourself to a team in competitive TF2 and prioritizing that over schoolwork is ridiculous. Finish out the rest of the year. You've got like one month left. Accept that your sister got off scot free because I can only assume that you flipped your shit or something (given the way you worded your post) and further convinced your father that you're obsessed with playing video games. Just understand that you were already on thin ice and your parents were bound to believe your sister over you. That's unfair, but it's just how sibling rivalry works. Most people who have siblings (especially younger ones) had to deal with it too.
Honestly, I don't even want to bring up the asian dad stereotype. Most parents should know how piss easy high school is and should have a reasonable standard for their kids to get better grades than strong 70s.

I included an edit regarding your decision. It's good that you decided to hold off on comp TF2. I just wanted you to know that your dad isn't doing this to be a dick and that you shouldn't be mad at him, especially if this is the first time that he's cut you off of one of your hobbies for the sake of performing better in school (although it's fair to say that your sister was just trying to make you mad).

I know I shouldn't and I have literally put the blame on me for several of the things he had done. And this isn't the first time he cut me off of something I liked. Like I remembered I used to go to my friends house and be really social at school and still get good grades, got a 95 on a test and that life was over

I'd like to see you try and argue with an asian parent that has huge muscles and taller than you. Not to mention if I did bother arguing I would probably be kicked out of the house. I respect and love my parents dearly I don't want to ignore the people that have helped me with a lot of things I won't even remember

First thing to do is to get things sorted out with your dad. Having extra stress on top of schoolwork is bad.
Next thing to do is to show your dad that you're committed to your education. Bring up those grades. PROVE TO HIM YOU ARE TRYING. Saying that you shouldn't be disturbed because you're studying is basically telling your dad to trust you. DO NOT BREAK THAT TRUST.
Last step is to talk to your dad about your sister. My parents had a very good understanding of my relationship with my brother, so if anything serious occurred and we pointed fingers at each other, they'd just shake their heads.
By the way, explicitly disobeying your parents because they did something unreasonable is probably the last thing you want to do. Compromise is probably the best option you have here.

There's enough time to study and play. Let me tell you a little story about me, and how I dealt with a similar type of situation when I was in high school.
I should mention before hand for those of you who don't know me... I'm 32. I may use some terms you are unfamiliar with like "dial up", and "land line". You have been warned.
The summer before I started high school I went to my friend marks house. Back then it was fairly uncommon to have a home PC. Mark had one and he said "you gotta see this" and then he showed me Doom. Now I had played wolfenstein at my cousins before but doom blew my mind. I had to have it. I went home... "Mom, Dad... I need a computer... For school!"
A week later we had one, and we used one of those AOL free hours discs and connected our blazing fast 14.4 modem to the phone line. I used my allowance to buy Doom, Doom 2, and Quake. My friend and I discovered a brand new mod for quake called Team Fortress and we began to play competitively. I was hooked. I wasn't allowed on the Internet until 6pm tho because my dad runs a business out of the house, and our dial up connection tied up the phone. We didn't practice or anything until around 7 tho so I studied and did all my homework from the time I got home until the time I could get online. I also actually used study hall to study.
Even tho I was hardcore addicted to games I was able to balance games and school. My grades never suffered at all. You can make it happen. Just spend a little less time in MGE and spend more time studying.
Also, be nice to your parents.
For school!"

thrasherThere's enough time to study and play. Let me tell you a little story about me, and how I dealt with a similar type of situation when I was in high school.

Lol I was typing it on my phone and it submitted half way
Also, be nice to your parents, don't fight with them right now because it won't solve anything. Take the punishment. TF2 has been going strong since 2007, it's not going anywhere. Do better on a few tests and then ask your parents to give you another chance. If they do, prove you can balance both.
Don't tell or fight with them now. It'll only make you seem more "addicted" and make their argument seem more valid
(Wanted to put that all in the one post... Stupid iPhone)

i guess you are right about not arguing, i try to avoid it a lot but some times it just feels like my dad is deliberately trying to get into a argument with me and i even tried asking him why does he want to argue with me so much.

i remember that i was an honours student throughout high school, did all my chores and didnt get into bad things like smoking or drugs
i was a docile kid back then, but my mother was really picky with my time usage of technology..
she would take my computer away if most of my grades were under 90 (i usually get mid to high 80s)
after sports practice, i would sit down and play on the computer but she would complain how i didnt study (even though i did for 4 hours downstairs while she watched movies upstairs). even if i explain to her that i did, she will change the subject and rant about how im talking back to her right now.
life for me was pretty depressing back then. i didnt play games whenever my mother was home. i had to stare up at the ceiling lying in bed for fun. she would say the same thing when im listening to music as well so the only time i can listen to music is outside or school (i had to fucking sneak my ipod into my bag)
she thought that i would grow up to be a serial killer whenever she saw me playing video games wtf
arguments with her were one sided even when it comes to my dad arguing with her
take my advice kid when it comes to asian parents (even though my mom is half asian) wait until you move out. they dont approve of any hobbies you do.

Ferskinremedyhow are you one of the smartest people in your class if you're getting C's?remedyhow are you one of the smartest people in your class if you're getting C's?I'm guessing you never heard of trying at the last weeks of school when you know you will get a good enough average at high school, good enough that if you fail you can a still pass and go to the next grade. Fragile, thanks for the advice and to others also, made up my mind I'll just focus in studies and just not play competitive until Im out of school.
Good decision.
But you shouldn't want to just get passing grades like Cs. That's not going to get you into a good college, mostly As and Bs will, as well as taking AP classes and other things like that.
You shouldn't want to just do the minimum; It'll help you out later in life [when you're rich and famous].
