Half-Life 3 will probably be the most talked about game of all time if it ever arrives. If you have to ask why, you probably didn't play the first two.
Valve’s current large-scale project is the recently announced Steam Machines—a series of open, Linux-driven, living room PC/consoles in a box—and their Steam OS. Rumors of Left 4 Dead 3 abound. Oh, and there’s the development of Source 2, the game engine that will no doubt power Half-Life 3. In fact, it may well have been stealth-rolled out into DOTA 2, though Valve has made no confirmation of this.
Gabe himself hinted at the possibility that the official launch of Source 2 may come with a particular game
if i had to guess i'd say its about half life 3 and source 2

the updated version of hammer included a bunch of stuff relating to source 2. in fact i remember when it came out ppl were able to run dota 2 on source 2 but as expected it was a bit buggy but definitely playable in local games obviously. there was also this from back in january: https://twitter.com/SteamDB/status/427893456690630656 and then the stuff packaged with the hammer update for dota2 affirmed it back in august: https://twitter.com/SteamDB/status/497516483229257728

Honestly, the age of triple-A games is gone. TF2 aside I have derived greater enjoyment and aesthetic pleasure from indie games (FTL, Hotline Miami, Papers Please, Reus, Binding of Isaac, Monaco, Defcon, and others) that have been brought to me via the steam platform, than any big budget high profile game over the years. I played Far Cry 3 and it was fun for a couple days but it lacked the twist/quirk that many indie games have now a days.
Also I doubt the jump from source 1 to source 2 engine will be that large when you look at the difference in graphical fidelity seen between portal 1 and 2, despite the fact that both games are technically running the same engine. For all intents and purposes we are practically already in the source 2 engine.

With how big a corporation Valve is, you'd think there's like a special section of Half-Life 3 engineers working in a secret Valve basement so that no one else working for valve knows or leaks it.

i remember reading in an article about free to play (the movie) that valve is like super serious about leaks after the 2004 hl2 one. they don't outsource anything anymore, they even have their own sound studio so there's no risk of anything leaking.
it completely wouldnt surprise me if they had a secret level devoted to half life 3 and other projects of that secrecy.
