Starting today my hard drive has been screwing up. Originally in task manager its usage was at 100% all the time, but disabling the Windows Search service fixed that. Now, doing pretty much anything will cause it to spike to 100% and whatever task I was doing will slow down for a while and eventually either give an error or actually load. Games run fine from what I can tell but boot and restart times are longer, opening a file takes a while, I can't download things from chrome, and I can't save a text file without getting an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
Have an 840 Evo 250gb and a WD 1.5TB green drive.

Holy shit I used to have this too!
I never even found a fix and I literally spent days looking for a fix or anything related to the issue.
I assume you are running windows 8.1 pro 64 bit.
iirc someone told me it could be related to a motherboard issue but I have no clue.
On a side note I trashed my old HDD because this issue kept on getting worse and worse until my computer one day was completly unusable. (45 minute boot times etc.) I replaced it it a 840 evo 500gb as my only drive and because of the performance this issue that still appears to be around is a lot more manageable.
Will keep an eye on this thread to see if I can also contribute to anything that could help others solve the issue.

Use Resource Manager to see what files it's accessing. If you're nearing full RAM, it's probably your system struggling to keep the pagefile up to date.

Pretty sure the ssd is performing fine and it's just the hard drive that's shitting itself. Here's the task manager when I try to open a notepad text file (takes like 30 seconds for the file to load): http://gyazo.com/5ac79b6640f7550ee0913b129027c5a2
