I do get a framerate of 120 in 6's, but I recently played highlander and my framerate was dropping below 120 every midfight (on gullywash). I'm wondering if it's possible for me to get a consistent 120 frames in tf2 and if so what I could do to get this framerate, or if my computer simply isn't good enough.
My computer's specs:
OS: Windows 7
Processor: AMD fx 6300
8 GBs of RAM
Graphics card: Radeon R7 265
TF2 settings:
Chris' maxframes
dxlevel 81
all lowest in-game graphics settings
fullscreen resolution: 1280x720

put your pc on maximum performance mode, defrag your hdd, disable aero, kill unnecessary processes.
And no-hats mod

dont use amd processor's, Intel is superior. Yes AMD has more cores and all that but Intel processors have more power per core, and also most modern day games will only use up to four cores, wasting the 6, 8, and 12 core processors from AMD

you could also lower your res to 640x480
you could also lower your res to 640x480
Geknaiiryou could also lower your res to 640x480
probably won't help much because resolution mainly affects video card, and his is doing fine at 720p
You just need a faster CPU. I doubt you can get much fps boost beyond what you're already doing.

I've had base resolution bottleneck my CPU in TF2 before. It wouldn't be unheard of.

It looks like you've done pretty much everything you can to maximize your fps with what you have. FPS drops at a highlander midfight are normal for anyone who doesn't have a monstrous computer, so it's unlikely that you can really do much about that.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/92187841/gfx.cfg try my cfg, especially if you haven't tried updating Chris MaxFrames
Also 4x3 Resolutions have slightly better overall FPS (do to a slightly lower FOV)
try 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600 if possible.

Don't say AMD processors are worse. They are meant for different things. AMD's processors are more for multithreaded applications (such as video) while Intel's processors are more single-thread optimized (so, they're better for most games). The FX-8350, IIRC, gives a pretty much stable fps in TF2, but the maximum fps is lower than a x570k.
But I would only get an AMD processor if I was going to be editing a lot of videos. the 3570k/4570k is enough power for streaming, and you can overclock.
However, OP, I assume you aren't wanting to stream. I would say a lower-end quad-core i5 would work well for you. I would head over to the PC Build Thread if you want to upgrade. Try the things here first before you buy anything.

Installing this hotfix and unparking my CPUs seemed to do the trick. I'm getting 120 fps in highlander now. If anyone else with an AMD processor and running windows 7 is having this problem, I suggest trying this out (also fixed those annoying framerate drops I got in csgo servers with a lot of players).

Also look into overclocking. Just buy a beefy heatsink fan and gain an extra 30-40 fps.

This started recently right? I also noticed it, and I heard people saying the recent fps drops are because of the Halloween update or something.
