Hey

I have recently got a new PC and I am having some problems running tf2. I installed everything and was playing fine, but with significantly lower frames than I would expect (~60) with occaisional juttering and frame skipping. I then installed Chris' high frames config, and am getting the same fps, but without the frame skip. On top of that it has started crashing.

my specs are below

If anyone can help me out, I'd be very grateful

cheers

I am pretty sure they're up to date, I only got the computer up and running recently.

I think the crashes have been caused by me tinkering with MSI afterburner. Is that likely?

Unfortunately I am not very computer literate so any help I can get would be amazing.

My scout partner was crashing for a few days until he rolled back his nvidia drivers and upgraded his riva tuner drivers and last night he didn't crash once.

So update everything else but rollback your nvidia drivers. It's worth a shot.

I usually only update my drivers like after 4-6 months later. The newest drivers are not always the best, especially since your card is rather old now (500 and 600 series out already). I would only update if you have the 600 series cards as there is much to improve drivers wise for those cards. As for the 480GTX, the newer drivers don't improve performance (only for the 660 ti-680 GTX cards pretty much) and just add features like TXAA (new anti-aliasing feature) and fleshing out FXAA.As others have said, roll back drivers for nvidia and update MSI afterburner and make sure your voltages are reasonable for any OC ing you did on your gpu.

You can also try the dx9 frames config. Lately dx8 has been crashing and giving me a lot of stutters. Something to try if nothing else works out. :-/

I'm an intel guy so I'm not sure how good that AMD CPU is, but I assume its pretty good based on the rest of the hardware. I have dual 480s, and one of mine died a while back (was replaced for free). Apparently the 400 and some 500 series cards have an issue with the fans where they never speed up to deal with heat levels. Does your card sound whisper quiet even when you are playing? If so, that's most likely the problem. Download evga precision and enable fan monitoring, it'll ramp up the fan speed based on how hot the card gets. Also, drivers blah blah blah...

Make sure "Windows Aero Extension" is disabled in advanced video settings. Disabling that plus Chris' Max Frames 9.0 brought my fps from 60 to 220.

Ok, I changed highframes to dx9 frames and changed the mat_queue_mode to `-1'. That seems to solve the problem. Played a hl lobby the whole way through without crashes with fps never dropping below 120. Thanks to all that helped!

Bulldozer and Fermi

D: I hope you keep a fire extinguisher next to your PC.

Nvidia still lists performance upgrades for 500 series cards in their latest drivers which means both 400 and 500 series (Fermi architecture) should run the latest drivers just fine. 200 series cards are much more likely to have stability problems, but even then, if you have a perfectly stable system in the first place you still shouldn't have problems.

Even if he did have this problem, temperature still doesn't affect performance unless you're over the GPU's TJ max in which case the core throttles or shuts down.

How thoroughly frustrating, the problem has arisen again.

The crashing has stopped but the fps issues remain. It's usually ~120 with no one on screen, but drops to 40-60 when there are others on the screen.

I was gonna have a look at the drivers and maybe try to get an overclock on the CPU.

It seems bizarre that after a day of fine fps with chris' dx9 it should inexplicably go back to being bad, having changed nothing.

Thanks for everyone's advice so far. Any further guidance or advice would be appreciated

Cheers

You should be getting in the 200-300 range with highframes on that pc. You said it was a new pc, did you build it yourself or have someone build it for you? Check your temperatures and see if your cpu is throttling. Try some other games on it(another source game like l4d2 and a game on a diff engine) and report back with the frames your getting.

General checklist for low fps with source game. Any of these could be a possible culprit.

Vsync on? Turn off
Aero running? Turn off
Throttling possibly? Turn off cool n quiet in bios
Cpu limit? Overclock with amd overdrive to test settings then set in bios
Possible Drivers? Update or roll back to just before latest
Nvidia settings off? Check back to 1 and 2 which should be in control panel right click background nvidia ect....

If it goes further than that into gpu overclocking. Well there is always that. But those should generally do it.
