I don't think it's fair to expect Cherry to have to abide by a vague community standard just because other people have done things a certain way in the past. However he wants to fund the project is very much his business and there are lots of ways of potentially approaching that: donations, affiliations, membership, advertising, and of course a % cut. Taking a % may not be the standard in TF2 but it's very much the standard in gambling so you can easily argue both sides of the coin. As you say though the TF2 market is pretty shitty and may not be worth the time to convert them into cash, that's probably the most important element to consider.

I don't wanna skew the stats or anything but 6% on 1000 Poops is ridiculously low. They have been beating us recently and I'm gonna say that while I'm confident in winning on the night, there's at least a 30% chance in my mind that they'll win. 6% is madness and I wish I could bet against us just on the off-chance. The bug is already fixed, but this fix only affects later games and I genuinely thought I got in contact with everyone who received wrong payout.

Switched to using trade.tf API for item values since it bases on a real trades made and not arbitrary values and slightly improved algorithm for distributing items.

I just single handedly swayed the odds for knd by 30%, and now my payout is shit. Maybe when the site should show you the payout you'll get after you place the bet?

i can obviously understand not being allowed to bet on the team you are playing against but how come you cant bet on your own team to win, isnt it just like more incentive for you to try your best?

Well in the case of it being a roll, you could just bet your life savings and come out on top -- think about it...

It's league specific, I only disallow you to bet on the opposing team, however ESEA and ozfortress don't want you to bet on any outcome of your match.
UGC, ETF2L and AsiaFortress don't have any rules about it I'm aware of.

There are a lot of reasons not to allow it but it boils down to the fact that it will change your behaviour. If a bet is placed in a spread situation, let's say win by a certain amount, it could lead to the team behaving differently than they would have otherwise and that means the betting market as well as the playing field is distorted.

While you might still be playing to win, you also might not do things that you would otherwise do, such as allow a merc or go slow for a couple of rounds trying out some different strats when well ahead. These things matter to other users of the site, and their judgements will have to change based on whether you have bet or not.

If the available range of bets becomes wider, betting on certain events or actions, then players would obviously fix that in their own favour once again altering the course of the game and changing the playing field for other punters, which undermines the service and starts to complicate the policing - which bets can players make and which can't they. The blanket ban simplifies things and theoretically ensures the game's integrity.
