For anyone who doesn't know Richard Lewis, he is a quite known journalist who has been doing e-sport journalism for 10 years now. He is pretty known within the LoL and CS:GO scene and is known for very controversial and honest content.

comp tf2 is a relatively tiny and non-publicized community. it is therefore very reasonable for people outside that community to see it as "dead", and I don't blame him for saying so.
it is also easy to call tf2 dead as an esport because of the tiny prize pools. that doesn't make the game dead or bad, as long as the community can continue to support itself.

he said "TF2 competitively doesn't really count anymore", most likely referring to when the game had sponsors such as coL, EG, dynamic, eMg, Check Six, etc compared to now. Don't see why this community just loves to shit on people who just point out the obvious.

He said that shortly afterwards and I think it explains all too well that a lot of eSports comes from sponsors throwing money on what's only popular rather than looking for more competitive video games with tougher skill curves. It generates more revenue for everyone involved and grabs better advertising for the sponsors but I think it sacrifices a lot of why players started playing video games competitively in the first place before there was money involved - because of the challenge.

We can whine about Valve not supporting our competitive scene but at least their eSports titles (Dota 2 and CS:GO) I would argue are way more difficult to master than Call of Duty, League of Legends, or Hearthstone and I'm happy that that brings more legitimacy towards eSports in general and the effort it takes to become a professional player and earn 6-figures playing video games.
