Hello! I'm in my 2nd year of Psychology and as part of my assessment - I am looking Social identity model of deindividuation effects (SIDE). Fancy term for "the effect of being anonymous in group behaviour".

How does being anonymous on the internet affect the way people behave in a group?

I'm focusing a little bit more on cyber-bullying. My research guideline calls for forum posts as a method of acquiring data - share your opinion here! You don't need to answer every question - just whatever you feel like sharing.

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?

Edit: Forgot to say, usernames won't be used in the paper. You'll be listed as P1, P2, P3, etc.

Player 1 enters the game. Im bored at work.

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
Cyber bullying is using a computer as a weapon to verbally or textually demean, berate, or harass another individual over the internet.

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
Yes, though cyber bullying on an anonymous forum is completely different from cyber bullying on social media.

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
Depends on the circumstances. Both can have lasting traumatic effects to a person's psychological well being in the form of esteem, confidence, or motivation. Traditional physical bullying creates a fear of another human being or social setting whereas cyber bullying can make you afraid of reading posts or checking facebook, but the outcome is the same in both (ruining someone's esteem)

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
No, TF2 is a circlejerk, some just jerk each other off too hard (alfa + mustardoverlord)

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
No, I think the worst cases of cyber bullying occur when it happens in groups. 1 on 1 cyber bullying is much less traumatic than when it is 5-10 or 100 people all doing it. It's more of a safety in numbers mentality for the perpetrators than an anonymity thing.

slightly off/on topic though i don't think your questions help your topic.

deindividuation is more the theory that you'll tend to do things with other people that you'd never do by yourself because you lose your sense of individuality and become a part of a group instead of an individual.

The anonymity is a result of being part of the group. For example if carter thought alfa was an idiot, he'd probably not just go in mumble with him and be like "hey idiot" but if carter were in mumble with showstopper, alec, rando, and cyzer and all of them were calling alfa an idiot, then carters sense of self is gone perceptually because the group is doing it so he becomes 'anonymous' and deindividuized because its all of them doing it, not because they're masked behind an alias or anything like that.

if you actually think closing your eyes is a solution to cyber bullying you're legitimately an idiot.

Some forms you literally cannot escape. There was some chick in my high school who sent a video of herself masturbating to some dude who then sent it to 10 people who all sent it to 10 people and so on and then all of a sudden this chick went from just your normal everyday girl to the girl who everybody had playing with herself on their phones.

Girl had to switch high schools and move to even try and achieve a normal life. I don't think 'closing her eyes' was going to stop the fact hundreds of kids were judging her differently and talking behind her back about it. Cyber bullying is more than just posting on facebook or on random forums, but more the distribution of harmful/hurtful content through any form on cybersace

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
pick one or more of the first 3 http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Cyber+bullying

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
no

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
Both are jokes in most cases unless somebody is physically harming you

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
no

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
It depends on what you mean, like does everybody get an irl photo with personal info attached to it? if so it'd mean people can spot the aspies easier and then more of them would complain about being "cyberbullied"

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
People being awful to other people online.

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
Yes, although I ignore it for the most part.

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
It's psychological more than physical, a lot of traditional bullying is usually physical, although I guess namecalling would be considered psychological abuse (which is mainly what happens in cyber-bullying).

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
It's a problem in every community, a direct thing in TF2 I can immediately relate this to is hackers that go after people that specifically stream TF2 to get them to stop streaming TF2 as much as possible.

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
Nope, just look at Blizzard and their REALID service. People are still willing to be garbage dumpsters even if you can apply a name and a face to someone. :V

1. Cyber bullying is repeated and relentless harassment over time using the internet as a medium. The general object is to make the subject feel demotivated/insulted.

2. I have, but not in the sense that my friends on Facebook are talking smack about me

3. Traditional bullying is more in your face, you know when it's happening. The damage is more physical sometimes, but it's generally as mentally damaging (if not more) than cyber bullying.

4. TF.TV is a massive site full of groups of idiots talking shit about people they don't like. It's not cyberbullying at all

5. It would decrease it, but the stuff that actually matters is when people are ganging up on others and making it known. If you give someone a name, they becomes more stressful.

1)What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
Being mean to people over the internet through social media

2)Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
Not really. I don't use social media all that often so I have never paid much attention to facebook or any other social media so its never been a problem for me. People have called me names in TF2 but that really doesn't bother me at all. I find it hard to get offended by what some random nerd thousands of miles away from me says.

3)In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
Real life bullying in my opinion is what the real problem is and not cyber bullying. I know it sounds a little insensitive but if people try to cyberbully you, all you need to do is log off. If someone bullies you in real life at school or work then you have to face them and there is not much you can do about it. You can try to tell someone but when I was at high school the teachers didn't care all that much and wouldn't do anything about it. So I had to face these 3 people who would literally assault me if I tried to stand up for myself or ignore them. I had to put up with this for over a year until I got moved to a different class. With cyber bullying you don't have to go through any of that if you just don't go on social media. It's really not that hard. However if the cyber-bullying somehow ties in with real life bullying then its completely different and a real problem (for example, your friends start spreading lies about you on facebook and then people at school start making fun of you because of it). Otherwise people need to man up and just try to ignore it.

4)Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
No. Anyone who thinks otherwise should probably stay off the internet for a while.

5)If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
Nope. Bullying will always be around on and off the internet. Although if people weren't anonymous it is possible that people would bully less. However bullying in real life still happens all the time and it has nothing to do with anonymity.

Uhm yea sure but that has nothing to do with the topic of cyber bullying. The reason for being bullied isn't in question it's the fact the bullying is happening and why. "because they deserve it" isn't a valid excuse and becomes a question of victim blaming and shit which is different from 'can you escape it'

You seem to misunderstand what I was saying. I was not saying that if someone thinks this then they are wrong. I just think that anyone who thinks cyberbullying is a real problem in TF2 should wait a couple of years before actively using the internet.

cracking down on bullying is pointless because its hard as fuck to stop

its much better/easier to just teach how to be hard to be bullied

Sharing private pictures with your significant other, and them betraying your trust is a whole lot different than just snapping nudes to strangers. Both give you the same end result though.

Just as a suggestion, I would find a way to do a survey like this, or any survey really, so that people have the option to submit their responses anonymously. I know that you're supposed to use a forum to gather data, but I can't imagine they would expect you to take data from responses that only came as a response to the post itself.

The reason I say this is because of the fact that everyone else that browses these forums can see someone's responses to your questions. This factor could alter people's responses to your questions, especially with question number two. If someone had a legitimate cyber-bullying experience, and wanted to share the experience with you, they may not share that information because everyone else here can see it. I know they aren't required to share any information with you at all, for any of the questions. But it could be data that you missed out on because they didn't want to have their honest answers be seen by everyone else.

This also goes for if someone maybe has an unpopular opinion on the topic, or one that is frowned upon. I'm not so sure that's necessarily a problem with the questions that you asked, but still, someone may not want their thoughts about it to be known to everyone else.

Just my thoughts on it. But best of luck with your paper, sounds like an interesting topic! I will fill it out if I have the chance later. For now I need to get back to studying..

I wanted to do this originally but I wanted my data to remain 'untouched' - something I can highlight in my discussion as a limitation in my study.

It is an interesting thought. Usernames technically keeps us 'anonymous' on the internet. However for some, aspects of their personal life has come intertwined with their online persona that it becomes difficult to voice certain opinions.

Good luck with studying

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far.

Edit: I'm running on coffee and got 2k words left to write while everyone is playing GTA V. Sad sad times.
