A quick survey on cyber bullying

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
Purposefully making somebody else uncomfortable over the internet
2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
Yes
3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
It is so frequent and easy it is rarely seen as bullying, unless on a large scale. People care less because the maximum punishment they can receive is a ban from a certain site
4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
Yes, although not on a major scale I would say that the general "lol F2P noob gibus" is bullying
5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
Partially, although it would still be easier online due to the person bullied not being able to react as they would IRL because there are still barriers, on the other side of the computer screen you cant really push someone away and therefore bullies consequences matter less

Unless this is a social experiment to prove how completely unproductive public surveys are, I don't think you'll get anything of value out of this. Also,

Rickunless u want to manually parse thru this thread I would make a google form, or surveymonkey/equivalent

I am collecting data from multiple forums and not all of them are created by me. The analysis is conducted by looking for the most common themes that appear in the responses.

ok while this and similar "arguments" are huge strawmans and no one who posts these pictures has ever used their brain, there is at the same time a decent point to be made.

on the one hand, if you shut off your computer or blacklist a forum because you are being bullied there, you have been denied access to your computer or that forum by the bullies, and that is completely undeserved. no one should be driven away from doing something that they love just because other people are mean to them there.

on the other hand, if you are being driven to depression by an internet forum or other cyberspace entity, it is 100% a better option to just leave that forum or cyberspace entity and never come back. yeah both options are shitty, but no one should be driven to depression by people being mean in a chatroom or forum when you have the ability to just leave. this is opposed to real life bullying where bullies can use physical force or intimidation to prevent you from just leaving.

another big problem with cyberbullying is that because there is no physicality, there's no real way to combat it. in real life if someone threatens to beat you up, you can potentially call your big brother or dad or something and physically stop them (or just beat them up yourself if youre alpha enough). but on the internet if you argue with "cyberbullies" youre just another retard arguing on the internet, and we all know that fixes nothing

so i think we should think more about how one might go about "fixing" cyberbullying instead of arguing about whether its real or not

If your argument on cyber-bullying is "Turn off your computer", I need you to realize how stupid and ignorant that is.

Are you bullied in real life with racial slurs? Just plug your ears! That fixes it, right?

The problem doesn't go away. You're not being clever or funny by suggesting people close their laptop. You're showing your ignorance to the reality of the issue.

There's a lot more to discuss, like the definition of cyber-bullying and different levels and severity, but overall, "Ignore it" is not an answer for bullying or discrimination of any kind.

2)Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
No, but I've had some asshole kids in highschool say shit to me because I have some slight facial twitches (hence name)

3)In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
It's much harder to get away with/has higher consequences. I know that at least in my highschool it did. We would constantly have assemblies and programs about cyberbullying and how it was the 8th deadly sin. It is also objectively much harder to get away with than face-to-face bullying. If some kid calls you a faggot in hallway passing, the only evidence you have of him doing that is your personal account of it happening. If the same kid tweets at you or comments on your picture, all you have to do is take a screenshot and he gets expelled. That's how it worked at my school at least.

Nice! Another Psyche student! I'll help you out.

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?

Any type of bullying that is not physical, this can range from anything as minor as texts to something as major as a video in some way, shape or form. This act is usually done to harass, mentally/emotionally harm, or demotivate.

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?

Yes, on multiple occasions I've had people gang up on me and spread rumors simply for the sake of their own entertainment at my expense. I've also seen it happen to many of my other friends.

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying

While the outcome of Cyber bullying is the same as traditional, they are both performed in different ways, much how boys mostly bully physically while girls mostly bully mentally. Cyber bullying can range from Anythjng electronic to pictures of the person to chats that have been screen shot.

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)

Yes and No. I feel like most people in the community are generally very nice and have good intentions, but there are certain people who do it. I'm sure it's pretty easy to name who.

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?

Not at all. If you get bullied or picked on by somebody in an online game, you can report them just as easily by their alias in a game just as easily as you could easily by somebody's real name in real life. Not to mention that, even if you know the name or identity of the person behind the screen doesn't mean they'll stop. I could get bullied by a John Doe tomorrow, but unless they live nearby, the only thing to do is what has been done for years. Block the person and ignore them.

Hope your project goes well, good luck.

EDIT: And can you guys quit with this "Just close your computer" joke. Sure, it's possible, but that prevents you from doing something you like or need to do, and then it not only harms you, but it also lets whoever is bullying you think they won.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the edgy internet teenagers don't really care if they're wrong about this. Trivializing the offense and insulting the offended party for even being offended is in the edgy internet teenager handbook.

i think removal of anonymity may reduce cyber bullying, but not by much/to any impact. i think this community has more of an ego issue rather than direct bullying of other users.

rofl r u retarded

if there is no connection to u as a person, no running theme of ur humanity linkning u to smthn, u can LITERALLY JUST MAKE ANOTHER Account and continue to shitpost on whatever forum ur using

if ur getting bullied on facebook or real life or smthn, that's 100% different since like u know u can't just ignore it to make it go away

but if ur getting bullied 90% of the time its ur own fault for being weird or annoying so like why not evaluate why people hate you so much and try to make a positive personal change?

Sounds like you're speaking from experience.
Nobody deserves to be bullied and nobody deliberately incites other people into bullying them; people can't help themselves for being who they are, despite whatever personal flaws they might have.

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
The same as normal bullying, but over the internet.

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
Probably. I don't really care enough to be fazed by it.

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
It isn't. Other than that "cyber bullies" are more often (but certainly not always or even mostly) less committed. Not less committed in the sense that they won't go as far, but in the sense that when confronted with a consequence* they are more likely to back down - not necessarily because they know they are wrong, but because they are soft. Said demographic generally may want to bully or antagonize someone through non-cyber means, but don't because of fear of repercussion.

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
No more than it is anywhere else. Human nature is the same. We like to put things in boxes and say that X or Y environment/factor causes bullying, or that "cyber" bullying is a different kind of "epidemic" exclusive to the internet - but it's simpler than that. Cyber bullying and regular bullying are the same thing. Once one realizes that they are antagonizing someone, they make the choice to continue or cease. And while only some may do the bullying, others are thinking it.

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
I'll start by clarifying that I think somehow removing anonymity on the internet would be a terrible idea, for a book of reasons. Would it effect cyber bullying? In terms of frequency, probably. In terms of extremity? No.

*A consequence could just be everyone turning on them and them not wanting to be ostracized; among other things

1) What is your definition of cyber-bullying?
Using social media to harass someone. Basically an extension of regular bullying, which I shouldn't have to give a definition of.

2) Have you experienced cyber-bullying?
No

3) In your opinion, how different is cyber-bullying from traditional bullying
Cyber bullying is the same thing as bullying. The thing I'd like to differentiate is that being an asshole on the internet to people you don't know ISN'T cyberbullying, it's being an asshole on the internet. THIS is what people mean when they say just turn off the computer.

If you can turn off the computer and the problem still affects you, then it's actually a problem, and it should be called cyberbullying.

4) Do you feel that cyber-bullying is a problem in the community? (ETF2L/ TF2)
As hinted at in my last answer, no. If you think you're being "bullied" on a single internet forum, and no where else in your life, then no it's not a problem.

5) If anonymity on the internet was removed, do you think it will effect cyber-bullying?
If anything, I think it would increase actual cyberbullying. My reasoning is that your real name would be easier to find on the internet, so people who are actually troubling you IRL can more easily find you on the internet and ruin your actual life.

OK that cutting picture is literally fucked up. Like, seriously, not cool.

Anyway, in my opinion, I feel as cyber-bulling should be treated as serious as regular bullying. In a generation where almost every teenager uses the internet or some form of social media, it's very likely that they will be prone to some form of online harassment. Ignoring a problem (in this case, cyber-bullying) isn't gonna help. It's more likely it will make it worse. It is a problem everywhere, as anonymity is what most bullies do with cyber-bullying, as they can stay almost invisible and harass them and pretty much get away with it.

Also, verbal harassment can be more powerful that physical harassment, as it hurts the victim mentally, which is far, far worse that a bruise or a bloody nose. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me", fuck that, a voice is just as powerful as a punch.

I feel as though it is important to educate our generation about regular bullying and cyber-bullying, especially for the next generation. Because the internet is just gonna get more bigger, and that means more cyber-bullies.

a little off topic but that might be my least favorite picture on the internet. its visually offensive, represents and potentially glorifies a lifestyle that is sad and disgusting, but is also posted ironically by edgy assholes. it accomplishes nothing besides riling people up and ruining threads

It wasn't posted ironically and I wasn't being edgy. The picture sure is edgy though. You people value life too much. I mean there's a massive amount of people on this planet and a few less, especially ones that don't have much to offer, would definitely do it some good. Getting bullied? Go work out. Do your math homework. Focus on yourself for a while, perhaps block out society for a bit. Realize how beautiful the reality of life is, not the veil you cover it with.

Life is a pretty cool thing and it's up to you how you want to perceive it. Getting upset about someone over the internet is genuinely funny to me. The only time I get riled up in game is because I have high standards for myself and use other players as an excuse for me to vent which is wrong and is something I knowingly work on and that's the important part. Realizing something about you can be changed or improved.

Next time you get mad or sad about something, take note of what it was. Try to make it never happen again because crying about it won't make those people go away.

MorefineWaldoUnless this is a social experiment to prove how completely unproductive public surveys are, I don't think you'll get anything of value out of this. Also, Rickunless u want to manually parse thru this thread I would make a google form, or surveymonkey/equivalent
I am collecting data from multiple forums and not all of them are created by me. The analysis is conducted by looking for the most common themes that appear in the responses.

Why did you choose internet forums? Why not conduct in person interviews with people? Or if you still want to ask internet dwellers that you don't know why not use an online survey? If this is for a serious class assignment then you can't expect to get good data from asking a bunch of people online to respond publicly...
