Putting on dx9 worked for me. I miss dx8 though :-(
i have not had any problems with dx8. I suspect im not the only one.
I used to get crashes, and for some reason deleting my cfg folder fixed crashing in dx8. I had to delete it like before every server, and it just stopped crashing. I can be the first one to join a server with dx8 fine and I don't get crashes anymore and put my old cfg back.

deleted my cfg folder, still crashing :(
Turning on bumpmapping fixed my problems with dx8, I guess you could turn it on and give it a shot.
mat_bumpmap 1
No guarantees that it'll work but it could be a possible solution for some.
I use Chris' High frames, I thought that was dx 8, and I haven't had any issues.
Did this affect everyone? because i still use dx8 and i connect fine.. :o
doesn't affect everyone that uses dx8 but a lot of people that do use it have crashing problems. the crashing occurs when someone connects to the server you're in and if you're connected to the item server.
if you reopen tf2 right after your crash sometimes you won't be connected to the item server so you can play without your loadout and you won't crash. that's the only temporary fix i've found until valve fixes it.
i've never had any crash problem in this game.
a few days ago i helped a friend with this weird thing, so I told him to backup his config, run the game in -autoconfig and disable the steam cloud, then he removed -autoconfig and put his config and launch options again, and it worked.
so i just recently saw this new solution on the SPUF thread to fix the crashes and so far it's fixed the problem for me
you put mat_dxlevel 80 in your autoexec and -dxlevel 90 in your launch options
I deleted all my tf2 files except maps/configs and redownloaded (it only picked up the essential, delete the folder, not remove from steam and it'll be fine). This took about 5 minutes and it's not crashed since. YMMV
mghughlaurieso i just recently saw this new solution on the SPUF thread to fix the crashes and so far it's fixed the problem for me
you put -dxlevel 80 in your autoexec and -dxlevel 90 in your launch options
what you're basically doing is changing the game to dx9 anyway, -dxlevel 80 in your cfg does absolutely nothing afaik
what he meant to write was probably mat_dxlevel 80 in autoexec
this lets me play for at least more than 5 seconds but I still crash quite frequently for unknown reasons
