So there has been a huge issue with coaches in newbie mixes lately. It's the opposite of welcoming for new players to have their first competitive experience be "yo hold up for 20 minutes while we get coaches".
If you have 45 minutes this evening, please come coach newbie mixes. I'm going to bump this thread whenever we need coaches.

I want to add that the time that we need coaches is every week
When everyone says "Ahh, it'll be fine.. I'm sure they have coaches" then nobody shows up.

I showed up, everyone was yelling about a pub or something, nothing happened for 15 minutes so I left.
I was waiting in one of the few other channels that isn't passworded for like another half hour but no one came in there so I don't really know what was happening.

You can sit in the coaches lounge until a coach is needed, you don't have to deal with the drafting channel. If you don't have a lot of time you can talk to an admin that is drafting and he'll get you in as soon as there are enough to draft.
I was busy with other stuff last night so I'm not sure what was going on with anything in particular, but I can tell you that one of four things was probably happening
a) there were a lot of mixes going and not enough admins to keep drafting
b) there were not enough newbies to draft another
c) there was only one coach available
d) you weren't in the right channel

Just message Alosec for the pass. The first night I did coaching, he hooked me up with it.

alosec wasn't online, sorry. whoever is the current drafting admin should be able to get you the pass for that channel.

Between Mixes, we have started playing on a pub server to pass the time/not making it a total silent bore.
I've sort of feared this happening.. people showing up late and not understanding what's going on, but as Kevin said above, I think there are a few easy ways around this.
I wonder if it may be good for coaches to check in with an admin when they show up - otherwise nobody really knows you're there. Wouldn't hurt to have a couple of them added.

Just create a coach-less division for players the players that just want to play pugs and you won't be short of coaches anymore, because when I coached, it was clear that they didn't want or need a coach around. They were just playing pugs and joking around.

That kinda defeats the purpose we aren't looking to be just a pug group OR a lobby system, we are looking to teach people how to play not just let them pug

@smobo did you tell an admin? because we deal with people like that if we get told that it's happening.

I guess I didn't really show up this week because after donating a server for the rush, getting told I wasn't allowed to coach because I "wasn't good enough" really turned me off of the idea.

I think the rule has always been one season of open and I don't think that should change.

One season of open is the requirement unless we are desperate, in which case the admins can make executive decisions. We had an abundance of coaches last week so we didn't need to worry about it.

I don't think so, or rather I think it's also beneficial. I don't know how many pug groups for people between a UGC and Open skill level there are but it's nice to play with people you already know and make connections.

It's probably my fault, Saam. I didn't notice how long you were there until it was too late. I'm sorry about that.
We have Newbie PUGs 2.0 that fit the skill level - they don't run on Fridays (because of Newbie Mixes) but maybe they should. There are definitely some regulars from there that fit the profile smobo is talking about and it might be healthy to get them out and leave room for real Newbies.

Damn, and I felt alright not being around this week because of our strong coach showing the previous week. Since this post has got some good attention, I'll drop some knowledge here instead of bumping my previous thread.
To coaches: we pretty much always need coaches. Like all the time. Always. After a night of having a lot of coaches, the bystander effect sets in. People show up on a populated night like two Fridays ago and see a million coaches and are like, "cool, other nerds got this". Then each coach that helped out that week, or anyone who didn't help or maybe didn't get to help cuz we had so many coaches don't show up the next week cuz they think "ahh, others will cover". And no one shows up lol. It's a serious help to even have one coach come and coach one game.
Again, if you're interested in this but dunno where to start, add me on steam, it's linked to my TFTV account. If you're a team leader who's interested in the sponsor thing I'll be working out over the next couple weeks, also hit me up. I NEED interested teams to help get the ball rolling.
To players: If you're in open, do not play in newbie mixes. This goes for all gamers - regardless of your possible previous play in newbie mixes. You guys who have played mixes for months and are now playing in open, you ballers have graduated, you're good, haha. You've got your team to scrim with and newbie PUGs to play, you for sure no longer need exposure to the game type through newbie mixes. Spread your wings and pwn noobs yourself.
I and other admins will be making personal checks on any regular newbies to make sure y'all aren't overstaying your welcome and playing newbie mixes like PUGs. Newbie PUGs exist for a reason. We aren't here to be a place to veg out and play some dope comp TF2; we're a place to help young comp TF2 babies learn how to walk.

Want to just mention again that this is what everybody thought this past Friday, and it took us 20 minutes before we could even start our first mix because of a shortage of coaches. I'm not certain that we had a true admin at first either.
Great post otherwise, good to hear that rules and guidelines will be enforced to make it better for everyone. Hoping we all continue to come together EVERY week (or as much as we can) to nurture the growing competitive scene.

Yep. I talked to KevinIsPwn about being there, so I thought I was good. Other admins are usually super beast about being there too. Not even the "head" admin is free from the bystander effect :(

If it's any consolation, I messaged Kevin right before mixes were due to start to message me if he was in need of coaches. He never responded, so I just assumed they were good.
Turns out he might of just missed my message, woops

I know people often aren't sure about whether they can coach till the last minute, but is it worth keeping some sort of spreadsheet for who can coach different weeks?

Awesome! You guys were great when you came. Don't worry about making it out each week - it's crazy to think someone will want to coach each and every weekend!

Thanks for reminding me of this idea - this was thrown around a lot as a solution back when pie_hero and the others took over mixes months ago. We couldn't figure out a solid way to make it work though, if you've got an idea on the specifics of this add me and we can brainstorm it up.

The admins that typically use their connections (see: big friend lists) to get coaches will not be there tonight. If you can show up to coach a mix or two it would be greatly appreciated.
Mixes start at 9 est. Thanks!

I stopped in last night to check out how things were going and offer to help out, but sadly got dragged away for the first hour. I was curious what exactly you need out of coaches. Are they there to act as captains and help pick teams? Or are they also in comms with said teams giving advice? Either way, I think coaching is something I'd like to help out with in the future.
