With TF2 coming to linux i have decided to try it out.

Few simple questions :)

In quake we have configs to make things easier to see and cut down on visual noise. Does TF2 have the equivalent of this?

I have seen streams for both 9v9 and 6v6 TF2. Which is the dominant format?

Any scripts and such i should know about?

I cant seem to add friends on Steam. How do i do it?

TF2 lobby seems like trash. Are there any better alternatives?

Are there any training mods for TF2?

Suggested servers?

4: #tf2mix on irc (go to atf2.org)
5: DM mod and MGE, see the server list to the right.
6: Everything in the active server list.

1) Yes, there are literally hundreds of configs for tf2 including FPS, class, and player configs. A good example of an FPS config would be Chris's maxfps config: http://fakkelbrigade.eu/chris/configs/

2) Everyone (or atleast mostly everyone) on this site plays the 6v6 format, although there is a growing community for 9v9's.

3)Chris's maxfps config is one of the most popular FPS configs out there http://fakkelbrigade.eu/chris/configs/

Null-cancelling movement config

bind w +mfwd
bind s +mback
bind a +mleft
bind d +mright

alias +mfwd "-back;+forward;alias checkfwd +forward"
alias +mback "-forward;+back;alias checkback +back"
alias +mleft "-moveright;+moveleft;alias checkleft +moveleft"
alias +mright "-moveleft;+moveright;alias checkright +moveright"

alias none ""

4) You cannot add anyone on steam unless you have a "premium" steam account. In order to make your account premium, you must purchase a game on steam or purchase an item within a game Valve owns.

5)There are a few pug services on IRC, the most popular one at the moment is #tf2.pug on gamesurge, and there's the older #tf2.pug.na which is oriented towards experienced players.

6) Try looking for "MGE" or DM mod servers, there is also tr_rocketshooting2 to practice airshots.

The closest thing to cutting down on visual noise is running fps configs in dx8. Chris' frames configs are the most common. Ask slin about his highly visible stickies.

Not sure which is bigger anymore, but 9v9 is growing like mad. 6v6 is big, and is generally taken more seriously by highly skilled players. So far it's where the real competition is at, but 9v9 is evolving.

Scripts? just crosshair changers, and shit really. Not much else worthwhile.

In the main steam window go to "friends" on the top menu, and select "add friend"... Search for them, and add. If you can find your friend's profile on the interwebs, http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197971280693 you can sign in, and add them there.

TF2 lobby is generally trash. On irc hit up TF2mix, and TF2.pug.na or look for pug groups. Searching this website should turn up a few.

Hit up MGE, DM, and jump maps for the best training.

There's a server list on the right of this very website.

Oh yeah... The most common communication program in this game is Mumble, so get that if you don't have it.

I'd say 9v9 (commonly called Highlander because there is one of every class on each team) has more players involved. I think it's cause it's a good entry way into comp for players that only pubbed before, so they'll definitely get to play whatever their favorite class is, and it's easier to pick up.

However, the overall skill level is much much higher in 6v6, and that's what this site is mostly geared towards.

Both are fun, and worth looking at. Also check out UGC League, that's where you'd find comp 9v9, and it's a free league, so if you don't want to pay right away in comp, you can play in that league (they have both 9v9 and 6v6).

Think this might be useful to say:

9v9 = 1 of each class.

6v6 = 1 medic, 1 demo, 2 scouts, and 2 soldiers is the "cookie cutter" line up. Scouts and soldiers can switch to the utility classes like spy/pyro/engie/heavy/sniper when they feel like they could get shit done as that class.

6v6 is dominant

there's no point in pussyfooting around the fact that highlander will never go anywhere in terms of serious competition

we already have lots of scouts/soldiers so I guess demo and medic would be most needed but you should play whatever class you find to be the most fun.

http://steamcommunity.com/id/capnfapn/

add me and i can show you the basics for any class. Ill probably be on later tonight.

Is there any way to change the color of damage text? I cant see the default very well.
Less annoying hitsounds?
View models in this game are so big they are intrusive. Anny way to make them smaller without turning them off?
The FOV limit in graphics options seems to be caped at 90. Is there a way to force it higher?

There are lots of HUDs you can download that all have different damage text.
Here's a site with some hitsounds you can download: http://tf2dingalings.com/sounds
Yes, the fov cap is 90. I'm guessing you think that really sucks but if the limit was 140 it would make it way harder to play the spy class, or even scout and pyro.

Highlander will never have LANs like 6v6, and will therefore never have as official leagues as 6v6 does.

W4sp, since you decided to try 6v6 (good choice), check this steam group out: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/na6v6newbiemix

It's an awesome group that's dedicated to teaching complete noobs (such as yourself) the basics of 6v6. High level players come in to coach, and you can just play all the classes and decide for yourself which one you think is the most fun.

Soldier - gunboats, escape plan
Scout - boston basher
Demo - everything stock is fine. maybe paintrain
Medic - kritzkrieg, ubersaw

Those are the only non-stock weapons I feel one would need.

You get them randomly. You can also craft them, the recipes themselves are ingame.

You don't need many to be honest, depending on the class you're playing. Some of these are personal preference, but I'd get 'em all just so you can experiment:

Soldier:
- Escape Plan
- Pain Train
- Gunboats

Scout:
- Boston Basher

Medic:
- Ubersaw
- Overdose
- Kritzkrieg

Demoman:
- Pain Train

If you're playing roaming soldier or scout, you may need more for off-classing, but I'd focus on these items first.

You gotta buy it yourself man, or rather, you need to purchase an item in the Mann Co. store. You can kill two birds with one stone if you add funds to your steam wallet then purchase a key or something. That way you get both a premium steam account and a premium version of TF2.

W4spcan someone help me with rocket jumping? I see people doing weird curves and stuff in MGE mod and i cant figure it out.

essentially the way air movement in this game works is while in the air hold the direction you want to go and then move the mouse in that same direction. Do not hold w or s just the direction you wish to go. for example, to go left whilst in the air you would hold a and then move your mouse to the left. I'd suggest practicing it in private create your own server thing whatever its called. just click the create a server and go to any map (id personally suggest granary or snakewater just because the place you come out of spawn at is open to the air) and type in console "sv_cheats 1" and then "hurtme -99999" this insures that you will not die. You will however run out of ammo but i cant remember the command for that off of the top of my head. Jump servers are also a good place to start. May i reccomend jujumpit, its on the right bar of this website, or if its not then click servers at the top and scroll down till you see it.
