I listen to music in a lot of games I play and I use spotify. Now I have like 1000 or so songs but I'm always hearing the same like 150ish songs over and over and it's really pissing me off. Anyway anyone have any idea to fix this? Or maybe some good free alternatives

Yes yytrium it's on shuffle

spotify works in a queue system so once one song is played it goes to the end of the queue, sounds like you're just getting unlucky

So there's no real way I can fix this unless I manually add shit to a queue?

The Spotify shuffle algorithm is awful. I've had the exact same issue on the app and web player. My playlists usually consist of about 100 songs and I would hear about 30 of them more than I'd hear the rest of the songs available. Something I noticed is that when I shuffled the tracks in the playlist itself, some of the songs that weren't played often would be played more.

As far as I remember, Spotify claims to use the Fisher-Yates shuffle method. But clearly something else is wrong. Someone on the Spotify community forum posted a solution that will make your playlist more random in a sense:

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-Windows/Shuffle-repeats-songs-too-often/td-p/22413/page/4

Just scroll down to solution.

XCVAs far as I remember, Spotify claims to use the Fisher-Yates shuffle method. But clearly something else is wrong.

Actually it would make sense that they do if people are complaining about it not being random enough. If you shuffle songs completely randomly, the human brain will try to pick out patterns and you will end up thinking that you hear certain songs, artists, or albums more. Good shuffle algorithms do not simply get a random permutation of all the songs but also try to separate songs by artist, genre, album, etc in order to not have your brain pick out patterns.

Yes I have this issue. I share my Spotify account with my wife, despite having several songs from a certain group, a particular one ALWAYS comes up first when I hit 'shuffle play' on all songs (note I mean the first time that band appears, not the first song played). And even though I have several songs by a different artist, I haven't had any of his songs come up in over a month.

One of the theories on Spotify's poor shuffling is that it resets the random seed every time you interact with Spotify. Therefore if you are constantly moving between playlists or looking at stuff within the app, your shuffle may be less random than it should be.

See this post: http://www.reddit.com/r/spotify/comments/325092/i_know_this_has_been_said_a_lot_but_here_is_proof/cq82dfk?context=1

Damn it, your flag caused me to think Spotify launched in Israel for a moment. Oh well, back to my 160 gigs.

Just scroll down to solution.

This sounds great and all but I have to manually add 1000 songs or so to a playlist and I really just won't do that

Ooh I remember I have had shuffle issues with Spotify. It seems to happen more when I go between mobile and desktop, where every other song will repeat the same random sequence that was played earlier. It's like hitting shuffle on my phone set up a play queue on my desktop and vice versa.

It hasn't happened since I came home from school in May.

The radio tends to repeat way more than actual playlists.

Yeah it basically has to do with how Spotify monetizes -- same thing happens with radio.
Just make your own playlists.

a different spotify related problem:
everytime i pause/play or skip tracks i get massive input lag in tf2 and the games registers my movements 5 seconds + after i pressed the button.

Also it crashes my mumble a ton and the only fix ive found it to pause/play music however that just leads to the earlier problem :(

what to do?
