So you've probably tuned in to a couple of the nation cups games, you noticed it's not going as smooth as it should, the past 2 days alone, 3 of the 4 games scheduled were postponed due to ddos attacks.
The last game USA vs Israel today had the same issue despite not having bets on saloon, so bets are obviously not the problem. We had the same problem in Portugal vs France despite no cast, so casts aren't a problem (despite a casted game being much more prone to being targeted).
So why is this happening? I wonder... I'm really passionate about the tf2 community and the competitive side of it, I wonder what motivations a person has to ruin a whole night of work and enjoyment for so many other people. Maybe I'm in the wrong by creating this post and giving even more attention to whoever the poor soul is, maybe not. I just can't fathom the reasoning behind all this.
Serveme is offline due to ddoss attack, USA vs Israel was not played today, Ukrained vs France wasn't played yesterday, England vs Finland suffered the same fate, the GGG cup was completely overwhelmed with this problem. Is this what you want? TF2 is a small community, we average 500-1000 viewers compared to the big names in esports like csgo, dota, lol, etc. So whoever is doing this, if its for attention, I would say you're knocking on the wrong door.
So, even though I know I'll not get an answer to this question I feel compelled to ask, whoever is doing this. What is your motivation? Were you banned from etf2l and you're mad at the ac team? Did u lose a saloon bet and you're mad because you lost like $2 of hats? Do you simply hate people who do a service to the community like blackout tv or tftv? Do you lack attention or affection?
Sorry for the rant, it just bothers me someone would go to such lengths to ruin so many people days.
I just hope whoever is doing this can correct his ways. I don't believe we, one of the friendliest and kindest communities I have been part of, deserve to be targeted in such ways.

It definitely is a bummer, feel really bad for the people behind the scenes and the players. Sooo much time is wasted which obviously doesn't help the community picture.

I doubt they'll ever reply to this. If anything, we can take this as an opportunity to safeguard ourselves from these attacks (something that would apply to individual players too), and possibly take the positive side of it. That's what going big/famous is - there will be always someone trying it to ruin it for you.
Also, are there any community leagues for big esports? How do they manage these problems?

15 and 16 year old edgy kids who think they're super cool for ddosing.
It's gross that those who put in hours and hours of work into something that reaps no financial reward period have their efforts tarnished by a few individuals.

This is the reaction that they're trying to suck out of people, don't post this kind of stuff anywhere, since it's most likely attention they are trying to get, even though they hid themselves so far.

I don't think some random teenager has the patience, perseverance, the technical know how, or enough money to be DDoSing so consistently and multiple targets at a time.

I think players and server owners need to tackle this DDoS issue as seriously as possible. European servers for casted matches need some form of DDoS protection like the eVL servers we have for Highlander Platinum games before anymore matches. Players need to set their Steam status to offline before joining match servers and make sure they're not using programs where their IP could be easily retrieved by someone they don't know. Postponing the matches is only going to postpone the DDoS's to happen again; we need to be proactive about preventing these games from being ruined.
I know for a fact in our match today against the Israeli team whoever was DDoSing specifically went for Nursey when she had Uber to make her drop and Yosh during one of his long killstreaks trying to get us to lose rounds. It's amusing to me how even when we were still in a good position to take rounds with those setbacks the whole server blows up instead.

Agreed. TF2 has hands down some of the most genuine, colorful and fun community members. It's a shame to see it be treated like this.

The problem is, it's realistically not possible to completely prevent ddos attacks. Whoever really wants to ddos something will be able to do it. No matter what. Sure, we have means of partially preventing it like you said, like protected servers, going offline, not sharing stv, not sharing skype info, etc... Even then it's still possible for people who have the know how, to still do it, and even ddos protected servers can only handle so much.
We shouldn't be afraid of casting matches or having bets on saloon just because it makes them easier to target, that would be giving in to these people, whatever heir motivation is. I'm just at a loss of words what is the motivation behind all this, we're not CSGO, we're not dota, we don't move millions of dollars nor thousands of viewers on a regular basis, we're just a small friendly community trying to have its place in the huge world of esports, and we definitely don't deserve this.

If I recall correctly a TLR vs nR PCW was ddosed yesterday while War was streaming. It wasn't nearly as bad as with the GGG cup nor the Highlander games I suppose (I don't watch Highlander, but if they would have to cancel a match because of it, it must have been bad), but it's still to ridiculous to ddos a PCW.

Bullet, the player responsible for ddosing almost every ESEA open finals was bullied harshly when getting into the game and I'm sure him cheating made the situation worse for him. Not totally up on the details but that's what I heard from his used to be friends.
Not trying to defend anyone here, but I definitely think we could be easier on new players. Most people that hunt for cheaters also are extremely mean to those they find cheating when imo it should be done more maturely. I hate them too but bullying isn't necessary, just ban and move on.

So far this week my net has been knocked out 5 times (twice during the GGG cup, once during pcws, once while pubbing and once during todays razercup).

As much as we would like for it to be true, attempting to shame the attacker(s) to stop is about as effective as using water to put out a grease fire. This community needs to come to terms with the fact that this kind of thing is a very real occurrence, and the more popular your game gets (and as prices drop) the more often these attacks will happen.
As the community that leaves us with the burden of defending ourselves from these attacks. We can ask/require server providers to have ddos protection, but that is never going to protect you from a ddos, no matter what protection they claim they offer. The real defense comes down to the players protecting their own information. Forgive me if I am incorrect, but the only way a ddos is going to work is if the attacker knows the ip they wish to target (unless your are The International and the attacker(s) take down the entire isp). If that is indeed the case, we need to compile a list of ways would-be attackers can get your ip or the server ip so that we can shut down these means of attacks.
First we need to be more concerned about server attacks since they prevent games from being played entirely. From what I understand there are only two ways to get the server ip: They know what server you are going to be on (you put the connect info into console while streaming, you announced to the world what server you are going to play on) and you stay signed into steam (possibly need to be private to fully shut this means of attack down but I didn't check that), where they can just use the steamapi to get your server that you are playing on. If there is another method of obtaining server ip's please list them, especially if they are steam exploits that we need to get valve to fix.

One of the EU pugme games just got ddosed. How fucking bored do you have to be to target a pug in order to get a reaction from Sideshow who was streaming and playing in the game.

When investigating this during GGG we found a way that you can find pretty much any server that someone on steam is playing on in under a minute.

we're giving them what they want by making these threads. there's nothing we can do about it aside from simple personal precautions. these people are children who get neglected by their parents and all they want is for people to pay attention to them...
