Would never happen under the Olympics branding but could be plausible as some sort of either 3rd party event where teams from different countries compete. Most eSports have something similar already. It also would surprise me less if there were some sort of spin off under official olympic branding (a la paralympics), but I still think that is unlikely considering how much money is in the Olympics and how few of the people there probably see a future in eSports.

No, why? Esports already have a ton of world tournaments in their respective games. If it was an olympic event there would be no standard because esports are not actual sports, just a bunch of games in different sub-genres.

Chess would probably come first, but it's unlikely to happen at all. Olympics are really about physical sports, mental sports (such as chess) have never really properly been on the table.

Our first goal would be to get esports recognised by the IOC, however this is not a guarantee to ever be in the games; chess is currently in there, and so are motor sports which will never be let in (olympics specifically bans motorised sports)

E-Sports are a totally different beast. We can do our own thing and be successful with it. No need to bring corrupt old men into the equation.

Olympics are physical events that are meant to test people's limits in theyre event. thats why you dont see things like motox or car racing. thats what the xgames are for, all the sports that involve motorized vehicles and such. probably more likely to see esports in the xgames than the Olympics. it just goes againts what they are about

at the moment i don't think the way esports now there are ever chances of it being played at the olympics, but i have the idea that as time goes on, it might show itself to be able to played at the olympics.
i think esports has only recently become a mainstream thing and so there aren't very many. i don't play any of them, but i'm pretty sure the only popular played ones are like heathstone, league, dota (all 3 of which i think you can play at the same time) and cs:go. i really don't think these games highlight what esports could be and they are all, in my opinion anyway pretty unfit to be played at the olympics. i have a hard time imagining them on a huge stage in front of so many people as it is.
when there's a game that average people don't have to be convinced requires skill comparable to an olympic sport, then i think it can do it.

You can understand the basics if not the more advanced rules/tactics of pretty much any sport being played at the olympics; the objective is pretty obvious.

With most esports its so much harder to tell what the fuck's going on if you haven't actually played the game which will tune people out straight away.

I would want to see men and women who devote their lives to sport and daily training that requires tons of dedication and years of hard work on such event rather than infants from their moms basement whose biggest achievement was constant spam on twitch chat and ability to click on pictures in their screens
but since it's 2015 everything is possible, some fuckheaded activists can propose something like that and show it as some grave problem in our society, who knows whether it'll be successful or not

There is one sure-fire way to turn people against something which they already have their doubts about: forcing it on them everywhere, even in places where it clearly doesn't belong. If you want e-sports to become more generally accepted, the most counterproductive thing you could do is to try and get some form of them into the Olympics at this point in time. The best way to increase the popularity of anything and sustain that growth is to do it steadily and fairly, not by elbowing your way in there.

Chess is not an olympic sport but its a recognised international federation, together with Motorcycles Racing, Lifesaving, Mountaineering, Bowling, Wushu and other activities. Im pretty sure esports will fall under this category.

No, i don't ever see that happening. The furthest i see E-Sports going is if like ESPN started to broadcast certain games. I have a feeling League of Legends isn't too far off, or just a brand new network just like ESPN but for games.

The IOC's main consideration is money. Esports will get in when broadcasters are interested (and that means esports will have to appeal to people of all ages not just the young). That could be a long way off.

I don't particularly agree with eSports as a name, but I don't think there is another way to phrase it. Sport implies competition. There isn't a distinction between physical and non-physical competition, but when someone say sports, we think athletic sport.

By the time I reach 50's eSports will probably be one of the dominant competitive games on the planet and within mainstream media, Olympics or not.

It just... Doesn't work. eSports and sports should be well separated, especially when you're dealing with something practically untouched and widespread like the olympics.

e-sports as a category and name is stupid. I much prefer something like Competitive Gaming or something because it isn't a sport in the traditional sense of the word
