TFTV Stream Layout Suggestion

Hello

Over the past year or so, I've watched the TFTV casts and really enjoy the entertainment they bring to the crowd with the invite caliber action they provide. However, I feel like one thing that can improve it a bit is the stream overlay.

The current layout right now is nice and simplistic; it has enough information and doesn't have too many things on the screen. However, a thing I've noticed is the info that shows what map and what the score is. It's in the far right, and I feel that it pull my eyes away from the action going on in the center. Plus, it just feels a bit out of place.

http://i.imgur.com/1zNOGAI.jpg

My solution to make the overlay better would be to put the info on the center, so that info is clearly seen and you can see the action. An example would be a CSGO match. The info of the score and team names is in the center, and they had side info that isn't that important (Bo3, sponsors, yadayadayada) to the sides.

http://i.imgur.com/UtH1zhZ.jpg

So here is my imagining of a better TFTV layout. Info is moved to the center, and side info can be moved in the corners or bottom. And you can see the round time and match time as well.

http://i.imgur.com/HYuPb20.jpg

That's my opinion. Let me know what you think about it

A lot of people ask for the score during the game, not knowing its actually on the top right.
I like this idea.

That overlay looked so good, why would they switch off of it?

I'd like to see this happen.

we switched away from it because it wasn't compatible with bo3s, and also when we started to adopt tftv-overlay. the overlay in that screenshot was literally just a picture and text source in obs, so i wrote a new one that's fully software and looked nice with the hud.

we're apparently looking into centered score overlays right now but i do not know the progress of that as of this post. the problem is that some people want to see previous scores instead of just who's leading in the series.

Display both scores, one top one bottom should look good.

Or perhaps you could rig some CSS or whatever to fade between the scores.. maybe like every 30 seconds or some reasonable value. So the top corner has the score of the first game, then the score of the second, then the overall BO3 score. Just brainstorming here.

The current scoreboard takes up barely any space, looks great on the hud, and is out of the way unless you want to look at it. Citing the people too stupid to look in the corners to get the score as a reason to adopt a clunkier, less theme-following scoreboard doesn't make any sense to me.

You actually lose information with the scoreboard you suggested, especially in euroland where they only play two maps each series. More space taken up with less information given is very rarely good design.

I can't think of a time I've ever seen a sport (or any competition other than some of the esports) keep the score in the dead center. It goes against several principles of design, and isn't really worth the struggle of changing (think of poor tsc and company).

^Yeah, those aren't scores and will be faded out, but the point is, the main region for flat elements is the center.^

I don't know what broadcasts you have been watching, but having overlay elements on 3 sides of the screen is bad design. It forces you to look all over the place. Yes, scores are often in the corner in sports broadcasts where scores change slowly, are faded out, or aren't very important. But there's almost always overlay elements in the center. And why would moving the element make it "take up more space with less information"? There is plenty space in the top center (where nothing happens gameplay-wise) to display both round and overall scores.

This just doesn't work in Europe where we play 2 maps. Both the layouts suggested in here means having team avatars which also isn't a thing in Europe.

Once you take the numbers that we don't have in TF2 out of the CSGO example you're left with

http://puu.sh/kI1Po/5a961a5861.jpg

Which is no different to the image safrix posted in terms of information given except it has an extra best of 3 game counter. The bo3 game counter doesn't make sense in ETF2L games which are 2 independent maps and you can also see who is winning in a best of 3 by looking at the scores of the previous maps.

The current overlay isn't intrusive and shows you exactly the information you need. The only downsides are maybe that you have to engage your brain for half a second to find out who is leading in a best of 3 and it also doesn't work well for best of 5s which are so rare they don't really matter. Every suggestion here is either equivalent or worse.

I actually disagree with David here, and do think that it's possible to have a good centered overlay. In previous CS:GO majors, they've had an info overlay underneath the team name and score which rotates with info about previous map results, match win predictions, and so on, which I think could be replicated here to great effect.

However, the general opinion among producers is in favor of the VanillaTV-style overlay, so it's unlikely that we'll be moving away from it at any point in the near future.

After seeing the number of people who will ask what the first map score was when it isn't visible on screen I'm 100% against any scoreboard that doesn't show all the scores all the time.

Sure, and you can accomplish that by having the info not rotate and just setting it to the score for the previous map. My point was that there is a way to display the info that I think works pretty well.

I don't think the argument against changing overlay should be "people are too stupid to look around" for more reasons than one. Not only is it just kind of a silly justification for your overlay, saying that it's for the intellects! But also the point of an overlay is for it to be brainless. No one is interested in spending time away from spectating just to learn the score. The point of the overlay is that it's a natural, brainless way to obtain information.

To be clear, I'm not against a centered overlay, it just has to work with a 2 map layout. The only definite improvement I've seen mentioned here is the bo3 counter which is actually something I'm going to request bluee to implement once he gets through the mountain of other higher priority overlay improvements I've given him.

just have the bo3 show like

5-4 2-4 3-2

instead of

snakewater: 5-4
viaduct: 2-4
process: 3-2

it would fit well in a centered display because the map names take up most of the space normally
oh and maybe have each team be on either side so it looks nice and symmetrical? as a viewer i wouldnt mind, sometimes having both on the same side can be confusing. but then again its not just me so eh

I want to say that I'm not against a centered thing (though I would say it's my preference that I'm not a huge fan of it). I would say, though, that it would need to be very cleverly designed to be both as clean as the current setup without being clutter-y, and the recommendation in the OP is both of those things.

I think that if u want to make a centered scoreboard you'll have to redesign the HUD as well, as most centered spectator GUIs are designed around the center

I feel like any centered scoreboard will look awful with the current spec hud

Maybe do something like this tennis scoreboard
http://www.fair-play.com/wp-content/photos-drawings/TN-1736-2.jpg

with the courts are replaced by map names and the clocks in the middle. You could combine the bottom cut outs into 1 long grid to put on the left of it or something.

who cares tbh

if you really want maps, flash the maps at the beginning of the round (maybe during the proposed short smooth before players can move?) by dropping the scores down in one column and the maps in another to the left of the scores with everything below the scores like a website dropdown menu (the width should fit properly)

Not a bad idea, but I wonder if it would look like the team on the right center of the map timer was out on an island, being that our current HUD stacks team tournament elements above eachother on the left side. From what I've seen, centered spec huds sort of "declare" sides for either team upon being centered, and that is not the case with what we currently use.

I'm all for a 2013ish design that cuts out the round timer in the center. I don't know how possible it would be with tftv overlay, but maybe we could have some kind of scrolling text bar pop up every once in a while that scrolls through the BO3 scores (maybe even scores of other games going on at the time? that'd be pretty hard to maintain though). It wouldn't have to be that big.

I think it fits nicely with the killfeed in terms of design and provides a lot of information, I wouldn't want to change it for a centred one.

Takes up less space while providing more information, imo.

Sure you can argue it's less fancy, but I really like overlays that don't take up a ton of visual space just for the sake of it.
The actual content worth watching is under it, so it should get out of the way.

Also, fading/scrolling text or extra center boxes would be way more distracting than a box that's in the corner and static 99% of the time.
