so this was a project i wanted to start for a while and finally went ahead and put it together. before i get into it just watch it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zireWqM3kk

what is this about? my attempt to help with the struggle to keep up with competitive tf2. there's a lot of matches that get casted and not enough free time in a day to watch them all. basically it's a condensed 'news show' that tries to give you all the information you need for that week of tf2 action.

keep in mind that this is JUST a first episode, so it's not 100% polished (i think my commentary was absolute shit + this is like 4 days late) but i'm putting this out there for people to take a look and see if there's any point in continuing it and making more of these. it's more like a pilot of a tv show.

if you enjoyed it post a youtube comment or something here so i can judge for myself if it's something i should continue to pursue. and if you liked it, it would be great if you left some feedback so they get better each episode.

before you point it out i know there were one or two points where audio was weird with the match highlights and 'bullshit of the week' is super low production quality (kinda meant to be tbh)

I honestly think this is a REALLY neat idea.

A couple of things to consider would be:

- Having music playing during highlights makes it hard to focus on what the casters are saying.
- The video would be even better if your voice didn't sound like your entire family just got murdered.

Other than that, nice video, and best of luck with this series!

(The transition thing that Andy mentioned is probably just me being weird, since everyone else finds it okay)

I like the idea of having some kind of news about big events, big news, big plays and ect. So people can keep up with this kind of stuff, a great asset for the community in my opinion.

If this was the idea, then i suggest u would be a lot more neutral in your future videos, for example:
You said that "Running a tournament is hard work, so its understandable but hopefully next time tsc can do better" from that people can get an impression that you agree that tsc did not do a good work/make the right decision ect. thus u can offend a lot of people who for ex. think he did the right decision.

The other example is when u said "Oh well, sometimes it can be hard to be Hitlers sun i guess" were u could also offend a lot of people who do not agree with that opinion.

Overall if your goal is to inform people whiteout possibly offering them then u should not have opinions and u should be neutral in every case. U could obviously use quotes if the person who quoted that is fine with it and as long as it is not you.

Then again this might be your style of approach, entertaining your viewers. But then your only reaching out to a certain type of audience. You might get millions of likers who like this style but there is an equal risk instead of likers to get disslikers or even haters .

I also think that there should be maybe only one or two highlights/big plays from this week thus making them feel a bit more special, it looses its effect when u have so many of them.

But then again these are only my opinions.

I absolutly love it!
Just a few things:
-I'd like if you didn't cut some of the sentences the casters say
-To make transition "smoother" I suggest you not to cut the previous clip and make a freeze-frame of the next one, but just put the name of the match on the bottom left/center of the screen while the new clip is being played.
-I liked it very much and wanted to see it all, but i dunno if i will watch a 20-minutes video each week (because i'm lazy and i'm sure i'm not the only one), so just make it shorter showing just a few of the very best highlights of the week! It will save you some times and, at the same time, it will be a much "easier" to watch and will catch the attention of the viewers (I'd say something like 10 minutes maximum).
-Put some passion in what you say!

I think you should chase this down and keep putting work into it - many have tried to make this work before and have lost interest or what have you. If you have to team up with other people to make it a reality - do it! You're right when you say this is probably the PERFECT time for this, and this could get really big with matchmaking coming.

I also suggest you to get ideas from ValveTime's News Round-Up serie. It's really well done imo.

Fucking awesome. As a kid trying to do the school while also wanting to follow comp tf2 more, this is amazing. Get a Patreon for this thing, I think it might do well.

Ok, so what I liked.

  • The whole news section. Like, this could be a built-in part of TFTV. Seriously helpful.
  • The list of wins/losses and scores. Good to actually hear that verbally.
  • The highlights idea.
  • The overlay/animation

Stuff that I think could/should be adjusted.

  • Verbalize what's going to be in each highlight. You might want to cut down the number of highlights for this, maybe not. I just wanted this because as I watched, I sometimes missed the title and therefore the point of each highlight. Not knowing what too look for took away from the clips.
  • The end section just felt strange. I dunno, that looked like material for another thing, and made everything overall feel much less professional. I suppose I understand that it was like the editorial section of the newspaper, but it just felt out of place.
  • When you introduce the whole tournament or series that you're taking matches from (e.g. at 8:28), you can full-screen the match list. That'll make the division between segments much clearer.
  • I actually didn't mind the music during the highlights, it gave the whole "show" a lot of cohesion, as through-music usually does. But as people have said, it could stand to be turned down even further for those segments.

Overall, hot damn. Good stuff. Good luck.

17 minutes of highlights was a little much for my tastes. Maybe a single "play of the game" for each match would be better? I could be watching too much Overwatch...

Really like the idea though. Keep it up.

This is what I always hoped eXtv would become. Definitely should get a patreon going, the production quality is already amazing and I'd love to see what you could do with more time to commit to it.

Some thoughts

  • Re-record plays that the cameraman missed and sync them with the cast
  • Fade out the audio between highlights slightly slower to allow us to keep hearing the casters reactions as the intro graphic for the next clip plays
  • I'm not personally a fan of the descriptive titles (joke ones are fine though) before highlights as it kind of spoils the awe in my opinion. A short title including the player and match (and some context if necessary, maybe a joke or whatever) is all I think is necessary, but that's obviously preference.
  • The bullshit of the week thing was funny but kind of went on a bit long imo

I absolutely loved this video and it looks like it has a lot of love put into the production and I do hope you'll make more. Only thing that felt off to me was the abrupt cuts from the casters, sometimes even mid sentence. Maybe having the casters' voices fade out instead of just cutting would be less harsh and flow more smoothly? Possible even having the casters talking during the clip transitions at a lowish volume then the frag clip plays and the voices volume ramps up? I don't know. It's a really nit-pickish thing and I don't really have anything to actually complain about.

thanks for all of your feedback, i'm pretty set on continuing the series now then. i read through all of your comments but it would be ridiculous quoting every one of you guys.

about the voice: i did about 40 takes on the different commentary parts until my voice started getting really sore and i just said fuck it and did everything in one take. but from what i can tell the popular opinion is to be more energetic.

about the music: not many people said much about it and the people who did indicated in some way it wasn't a big issue, so i won't change my approach to that. i will consider turning down the music further in general, but i want to avoid lowering music during clips since the effort basically multiplies for each highlight i have. but i'll consider it if people agree that i should reduce highlights even more.

about neutrality: i think chiefdog was the only person who said anything about it but i would want some more opinions on this because if i go down the route of just stating facts, i could see how it gets boring to some people and once i lock myself out of making comments for humor etc i wouldn't want to go back on it.

about the amount of highlights: at the start i thought people would care more about maintaining match integrity, meaning that they want a good idea of how the match went and the general flow of who was more dominant etc. i had clips for every round cap until i cut them all out because it would make the video insanely long. next video i can cut down on the highlights even further. what do people prefer more - at least 1 highlight of each match that got casted or only highlight very worthy things and it doesn't matter if the video ignores the 'less' notable ones?

about transitions: cirlo - do you mean i should not do the title thing at all? i mostly included it because i wanted to have options available for me to provide context to the viewer if i needed to, and if i didn't want to include any context i would just slap some non-sense on it. dont - i'll keep in mind that people don't enjoy missing things - i wasn't sure how to balance this since i know some people are happy to just pause the video. i also recognize that some of you are upset casters are cut off and the volumes could be faded in and out better.

about bullshit of the week: when i made the video i thought people would get bored with just someone talking about news, so i wanted to add something that would leave the video on a 'higher' note. obviously and even i admit that it was pretty badly done, but the general idea was that i wanted to break away from the video with something more light hearted for people to think about. and i while making the video i thought it was out of place too, but i suppose i'm happy people thought the same. should i keep it and do it in the different way, or just remove it entirely?

about general length: most of you agree that the video could be even shorter.

to deetr: i considered doing this (re-recording stuff the cameraman missed) but my concern was where to draw the line with how much time i should put into it. the issues i thought were troubling were: 1. looking through the demo for the right tick, 2. my own camera work inside the demo (if i wanted to give extra camera angles etc), 3. recording and rendering the video (from past projects i've done on tf2 this is actually pretty time consuming, 4. hud - how do i know which one to use? 5, all of the etf2l clips were off-sync due to an issue with how i got them, and it was a massive pain. i'm not sure if i want to deal with audio sync issues anymore.

for everyone else, thanks for all your support! i want to emphasize that just saying good job really helped me judge the general reception of the video and of course it validates my time commitment to this.

tldr for questions i want answered (by anyone):
highlights - at least 1 per casted match, or just coolest things of the week?
bs of the week - keep it and do it differently, or cut it completely?
video length - 10 to 15 is the sweetspot?
recording things - how important is this to people?

these are the important things i wanted answered but i'd encourage you to read the other stuff about because i go into detail about other equally important things.

special thanks to my nerds andrew gothmog and teejay, to the best pocket showstopper and encouraging words from getawhale

I honestly don't see a problem with current length. Its basically sports news show.
A good thing with bullshit(s) of the week would be to put stupid or dribbling plays in matches, because its much more objective.

For match integrity - I didn't mention this, but I felt like getting the general feel of each of the matches was important, since scores can sometimes be misleading. I'd cut down the highlight to the best of the match, and see if you can find someone else (or several others) to do match write-ups, and then read that out loud to a full-screen of logs or match score stats.
Edit: I like the "fails of the week" idea as the bullshit part

I enjoyed video.I was just just thinking of sports highlights shows and how that vould be used as inspiration.

You should give some introductions to the teams and a bit of background to each game. This helps people who havent been keeping up with things at all or are new. For example, 'Reason go into this game undefeated in Prem this season. Lego, after taking a point off 2nd placed epsilon in week 3 hope to take it one step further and win against a top team to help them reach the play offs' or something. You can also mention mercs and other relevant stuff. At the start show the league table and then show the league table after the highlights and say who's moved and what's coming next week.

Clips should flow from one to another, there's no real need for titles as we can see what's going on and can hear from the casters.

Might be worth having a cohost/panel/special guests so you have someone to discuss the games with and you can bounce off each other to make it more lively. As long as you keep it focused and don't ramble so it turns into a fully charged episode, it could be good. Will also make it slightly easier on you as I can imagine it take a lot of work.

At the end maybe have a best of the rest so a really quick summary of ozfortress/Asia/high etf2l/esea im if anything interesting has happened.

I look forward to future episodes since I find it hard to catch NA games. Keep it up.

Would love to see something like this as some kind of outro in teamfortress.tv streams, maybe a bit shorter.

In terms of neutrality, if you're not 100% clued up on a situation I don't taking a side on a soapbox is going to be helpful to a situation that is controversial.

Hey all, I loved this video so much I personally reached out to Shounic, he'll be joining the Comp.tf team and will be producing this series for our channel, this gives it much more exposure as our channel has a bigger following and also helps us keep pumping more content regularly for all of you so I think it's a win-win situation for everyone.

Shounic will be producing this series for the channel on his own, this will be a mutual partnership, and I think we just need to iron out some stuff from the feedback received and to adapt to our channel and we will be good to go for the next one. There's great feedback on this thread and after a long talk with him I think we can improve on it a lot and give it a more "professional" feel for the channel.

He expressed me his biggest concern was the time spent going through all the vods and finding the moments / highlights so I would like to know if anyone would be interested in helping out with that? I'll probably set up a slack for the channel and wiki this weekend (been meaning to do that for some time) and we can add up people interested in helping out for this weekly series.
