Steam Escrow Update

So apparently Steam is on the verge of releasing a new security update that will ultimately fuck over a lot of people who trade, as well as most trading or betting sites for TF2 and CSGO. Now, I very rarely trade or bet, but this is obviously pretty serious for those who do, if it's true.

Why exactly are they doing this? Is it to protect little kids who can't figure out a scamming link or is something bigger behind this? Cause if it's the former they should really just dump this shit. If you're dumb enough to fall for a scamming link you deserved it, end of story.

I guess so, you have to use the Steam app to verify your account? Or something.

The best ones are were someone posts a random link whiteout saying anything and u just click on it out of curiosity :D.
But in all seriousness some scammers are really good, it is really hard to tell the difference and not all people are so clever and intelligent as you are cinder.

I personally think its good that valve is upgrading their safety and protection and what not because a lot of people get fucked over by these people in the world who wish to do us harm AKA "Evil doers".

Then again...not everyone have iPhone/smartphones

my phone doesn't support steam :<

this would be like 6000000% better if you could use email verification for it, and everyone has/can get an email and have it work so why doesn't steam use that

only way it's not just as safe is if you use the same password for everything which is a bigger issue anyways

This is fucking stupid.
If this happens this will kill trading.
Why the hell should we be suffering because of some people which age is a single digit number ?

If it's as bad as it sounds they will probably just change it to work better once everyone complains about it.

I dont know what are they thinking but this will not make stupid people smarter. I mean everything goes through your email these days and even if they get your login and password using fishing methods then how the fuck would they pass steam guard?

Steam has been used to lander money for YEARS. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this is basically being forced by more than one government.

steam trading already uses email verification, and it does its job pretty well last I checked

I feel as if this is just valve's way of easily gutting third-party markets, since I highly doubt this will change its internal community market at all

What's there to explain.
Get dirty money, buy steam gift cards, get games/keys, sell them, cash out.
When they ask you where you got your money, you got them from trading/unboxing. Obviously you cannot make a lot this way, but still maybe you were just lucky ;)

anyone calling it stupid isnt thinking about the logic here.

id venture to guess scam emails/posts are a massive ~80-90% amount of steam support tickets opened.

Doing this will reduce the number of trade and market scams drastically, and give them more support manpower to focus on real problems like pricing, chargebacks, account hijackings and lead to more efficiency dealing with the non idiots.

It's annoying, but its not ridiculous or as outrageous as youre all making it sound. The steam app gives you a notification in your phone header bar with your code, it's been updated recently and it just means you need to have your phone with you when youre at the computer.

flameand it just means you need to have your phone with you when youre at the computer.

1) even a mild skim through reddit is showing a whole lot of people who either don't have a phone, or have a phone that can't use the steam app
2) this isn't taking into account trading websites, which, if what geel is saying is correct, will require a unique phone # for every single bot they have

Well just imagine putting the money into thousands of steam accounts, buying games with it and selling it at release date for 10% less. You'd white wash this money and It'd be very hard to trace back I imagine, atleast hard enough for investigators not to put all their resources in.

Lets get real guys, just think about it for a second. All Valve's probably gonna do is set it as an easily changeable default feature because otherwise Valve would loose a lot of money due to people not wanting to play their games and spend money on them as much due to their lack of interest in the games

What I meant with "not a lot" is that when someone asks how you got your Escalade working minimum wage job you don't want to say uncrating ;D
You might however use it to explain weed money to your parents if you live with them :D Or maybe even something more.

FYI you don't just enter a code from the steam app -- you have to visit a webpage within the steam client on your phone and hit an accept button. It's more involved than just a code.
