alright so at the beginning of this week my friend, who had convinced me to get a gym membership, has been taking me to the gym with him. I'm athletic and it's not my first time working out, though it is my first time working out with a consistent schedule. my friend works me hard enough so that i'm gaining a lot of muscle but not overworking myself. my problem is that i'm sore as fuckk and today he said we're gonna max out. basically, how do i treat this workout soreness?
Soreness is a good sign so I wouldnt be too worried about it. However you need to be careful working really hard while sore. Take more time stretching and warming up before going hard if you are sorer than normal. Always stop if something moves from being sore to being hurt.
i go to the gym with my dad at like 3 in te morning and he basically just told me to stretch b4.

Short runs get rid of soreness the best imo.
I'm not sure about maxing out while really sore, it probably won't be a good benchmark if you're that fatigued.

just get some sort of schedule going and you will get less and less sore as you go
soreness, or DOMS, is not necessarily indicative of an effective or good workout. it is essentially your body’s response to a new stimulus. i'm not sure what you mean by "maxing out" (going to failure every set? testing your 1RM?), but depending on your level of soreness, maxing out might not be the best idea.
make sure you are eating/drinking enough and sleeping well. like others have said, stretching and foam rolling can be beneficial, too.

Learn some basic stretches. The soreness won't go away immediately, but it will help out. Also remember to stretch after the workout.
You shouldnt be working out the same body parts 2 days in a row but drink a lot of water, eat lots of protein and if you have, use hot and cold patches.
If you're working out consistently like that try drinking protein shakes before and after you work out to reduce soreness a tad.

I just finished a freestyle skiing tournament and I just do hot and cold treatment mainly and take some anti swelling pills and such

Keep going. Work through the pain. After a while it will go away and you won't get sore anymore.

DOMS is the worst when you first start or haven't worked out in a while. Give it a day or two and it will be mostly gone and after that unless you take a break the soreness won't be anywhere near as bad. I tend to get massive leg DOMS if I don't squat for a week or two but after the third session or so I don't notice it at all. Like others have said eating right (lots of protein) and lots of sleep is the best way to heal up.
doms is irrelevant, if you're new, dont max out. like dont even go below 8 reps on any set, work on form and shit. the soreness fades, assuming you establish a consistent routine

For me, if I were to take say a month or more off of working out I'd be sore the next day after working out. And this soreness would last about a week, but would gradually start fading away after 2-3 days.

For example a lot of people forget to stretch or stretch improperly or cold stretch. Ideally you should be stretching after being warmed up. Jog for a bit, and do a few jumping jacks or a few very light high rep lifts and then stretch. If your soreness was caused by improper stretching or stretching incorrectly this will reduce or eliminate your soreness.
The other mistake some people make is working the same muscles everyday. When you workout you area tearing some tiny muscle fibers, these need a day to repair themselves and grow back, so alternate what muscles you work out and this can also help with soreness.
