Is there much of an fps increase to anyone? I feel as if my fps is the same for both scripts.
Some people notice a difference some don't. I know a lot of players just prefer the blocky look of Max. If you don't notice a difference, just go with preference.
i get better fps with dx9frames, depending on how old your hardware is this may be the case
I think someone said there's only a 5fps increase when using max frames over high frames? So it's pretty pointless unless you want your game to have more pixals.
just do a timedemo and test each config
for clarification, to use a timedemo just make a short demo of an intense situation, like a 32 man pub or just a midfight, and put timedemo <demoname> into console, and tf2 will run through the whole thing and spit out your average fps and variance, so you can change any setting you want and get an exact value on how much it affects your performance

also, the blocky look from maxframes is just "mat_filtertextures 0" and "mat_filterlightmaps 0" instead of 1 in highframes, so you can change the blocky look in either if you want to
It usually makes a difference for me. When I had highframes, I usually get 50-80 FPS.
After I switched to maxframes, I got to like 90-150.

I just ran a few tests of a brief demo of graphics intensive pub play and got surprising results
DX9
___
dx9frames:73.60 fps 8.985 fps variability
maxframes: 76.16 fps 8.953 fps variability
highframes: 62.94 fps 7.651 fps variability
default: 115.47 fps 8.673 fps variability
DX8
____
dx9frames: 112.34 fps 8.330 fps variability
maxframes:115.47 fps 8.673 fps variability
highframes:87.82 fps 6.042 fps variability
default: 83.38 fps 6.941 fps variability
"default" is what the game sets things to with -dxlevel 95/81 still in the launch options
so according to this, for my system, DX9 default performance and DX8 maxframes are identical. what even. also dx9frames gets better performance in dx8, even on my system which seems greatly biased toward dx9? Yeah I have no idea.

Nil, post the demo. I'd like to compare your results to mine.
i'm guessing you still had a config loaded when you tried testing 'default'. Test it again? dx9 configs are still going to work in dx8 and you would expect even better performance in dx8 with them, so that's not that odd.
to add to that, you should test "default" with the -autoconfig launch parameter.
I commented my config out of my autoexec for all tests and relaunched the game to test "default", so I don't see how I could have had a config still loaded. edit: looks like you're probably right after all, pheesh. I take it -dxlevel doesn't actually reset that much.
hoolito add to that, you should test "default" with the -autoconfig launch parameter.
DX8 def w/ autocfg: 83.07 fps 7.182 fps variability
DX9 def w/ autocfg: 56.36 fps 7.916 fps variability
to put all that on a single table: http://pastebin.com/mwtPQ1YA
that makes more sense, thanks.
