When/ if e-sports edge out traditional sports, could an e-sports Olympics become a thing?

I mean I'd love to see it be a thing, but you're gonna have those people with power turn it down because it's not "physical enough" or whatever the fuck excuse they could come up with. I could write a novel on this shit but I'll pass. I do hope one day it's normal to wonder which eSports rts/fps teams will show up to the Olympics.

if anything we would see esports in something like the x games, i know the olympics are almost strictly sports focusing on the human body, thats why there are no car or motorcycle type events. but maybe some other big sporting event will pick up international esports, it would be fun to see

I do not think that it will be like a huge thing like the real olympics ever of maybe not for a extremely long time. but it would actually be really cool if there was like a huge lan event with all the big esports and some smaller esports as well and having it on tv as a possibility would be super cool.

I agree but have you tried watching Dressage? Not only is it boring as fuck, I have no idea what is happening and the Horse appears to be doing most the work. If Dressage is an Olympic event then surely there is a clear case for eSports.

With that said I'd prefer things like Dressage and Equestrian out of the Olympics along with eSports. I would rather see some form of international body form for gaming that organises it's own "Olympic Games for eSports" form but there are far too many things needing to happen for such a thing to ever occur, and the likelihood of this is really small.

As for eSports - It could happen, it might not. Professional gaming is growing and will continue to grow, a lot depends on professional bodies/groups forming and pushing for the game to go with direction. (World Esports Association) formed this year, perhaps that is something they could grow into pushing? Who knows, it all depends on what the people pushing the games want. Esports is weird, I am no expert as many other people here watch CS:GO, Dota 2, LoL and I have no interest in those games, but it seems to me professional games are pushed by leagues/developers/sponsors/broadcasters/players themselves - So there would have to be some form of unity and active campaign to push gaming in this direction. Potential of eSports is huge, everyone will know but convincing the IOC it should be an Olympic Sport? Massive effort.

Technology is always evolving as well as E-Sports. Video Games can be seen as something that brings various nations and cultures together and also has a significant impact on peoples lifestyles all over the world. Its definitely something that isn't completely out of the question in the foreseeable future.

Not sure if they still do, but ESWC used to be held every year and had lots of different games under 1 roof that people would qualify and play for (their own country if I remember correctly). Even if esports doesn't go to the olympics I'd love to see something like ESWC get more love.

If you want to know how important ESWC was to growing the early days of esports listen to some of the talks Day9 did about them.

not trying to deflate any hope of esports getting big, but i think the rest of the world (nongamers) would never look at it seriously enough to have something as big as the olympics funded for video games. in our own niche there will most certainly be larger and larger events as esports is growing in general, but i think that gamers represent a small percentage of the population, especially gamers who take it seriously (as a sport, for money/recognition). id love to see a seriously fuckhuge LAN someday where the audience is something like an entire football stadium at max capacity.

I think over the next few decades e-sports are going to become "mainstream" and be insanely popular, but they should be kept separate from the Olympics IMO. I see the Olympics as a celebration of athletic feats defying the limit of the human body, and while there's a specific kind of physical skill required in videogames (hand to eye coordination, precise hand movement etc), it doesn't really fit the spirit of an athletic competition.

That said it wouldn't surprise me to see top gamers earning similar paychecks as players of "mainstream" sports like football, basketball etc within those few decades.

The Olympics are a display of athletic and mental strength/endurance. I don't think it would be right to mix it together.

However it would be cool to have esports on that scale, just not in the same organization.

Also since the IOC is a super messed up organization, I don't think you'd want esports controlled by them.

I mean, both chess and bridge are recognized by the IOC and may apply to be part of future games. I don't see why eSports couldn't get IOC recognition if we only give it some years.

If that's the way we want to grow eSports that is. It might not necessarily be the best way.
