Hey guys, as promised, here is the thread.
I wanted to open up the discussion regarding future LANs in and around Toronto, and what you guys would like to see out of them. This is a discussion I have wanted for quite a while, but kept putting it off. It was brought to my attention a little while ago, the possibility of having a small get together in Toronto at the same time as FLan. Only problem is, I can't organize that because I'll still be working at summer camp. Please keep in mind that I am likely to work at this summer camp again next year.
So here's what I want to know from you guys, in particular the ones who attended the previous Toronto LANs I've done:
- Do you want smaller, more frequent local events (With small-no prizes), or bigger, less frequent events?
- Would you like to remain in the Hunter & Lucas venue, or use a venue that is BYOC?
- Are you open to attending a bigger LAN if I were to organize the TF2 tournament there?
Any feedback from previous Toronto LANs are welcome as well.

The thing with smaller more frequent lans is that I dunno if we have that many people in Toronto that are going to come and play. I could be wrong though because I don't know the turnout of previous TLANs just assuming from what I think.

I don't think Hunter and Lucas will fit everyone if people outside Toronto attend... and it would be nice meeting new people other than the frequent TLAN go-ers.

I am not saying that you shouldn't work on some Toronto stuff, but hit me up because lee and I have been working on North East and Chicagoland stuff that looks pretty promising and we don't want to splinter potential audiences.

I feel like if we are doing more frequent LANs, then Hunter and Lucus should be fine. For bigger less frequent LANs a BYOC event might be the way to go, however it might alienate some people who would want to go but need to fly in.

I think we should stick to bigger less frequent LANs. It's tough to get everyone's schedules matched up frequently. Maybe bout once a year.
I was fine with Hunter and Lucas.
I am also fine with attending a bigger LAN depending on how far it is.

I'm unsure if I have the time and resources to attend a LAN in the US, but I would totally attend a TF2 LAN in Toronto.

I will probably be able to come from michigan if the demand is high enough.

I'd fly in from the great south, regardless of size or location. Idk about others but personally it seems like a hassle to BYOC, although I understand the financial aspect and reasoning behind it.

Hidi- Do you want smaller, more frequent local events (With small-no prizes), or bigger, less frequent events?
I think that bigger less frequent lans would be a better option as we could aim to get as many people to show up as possible and get a good tournament.
- Would you like to remain in the Hunter & Lucas venue, or use a venue that is BYOC?
I'm kinda split on this part, on one hand I like the venue, and it's nice to not have to take a computer + monitor with you.
On the other hand the computers were kind of shitty, the one that I had in December was dropping down below 60 fps in every teamfight and made me not want to play. I think someone else (hassassin maybe?) was having the same issue. I think if we are getting enough people it might be worth it to go somewhere else but for a small lan like the last one Hunter & Lucas will be fine.
- Are you open to attending a bigger LAN if I were to organize the TF2 tournament there?
I would be down to go but you probably already knew that, perhaps we (ie: everyone who is interested in going) should discuss the date and location and see how many people would be able to go.
Any feedback from previous Toronto LANs are welcome as well.
IMO the first one was much better then the second one. The tournament felt like an actual tournament and more people were able to attend. The only issues I had with it was the lack of computers and having to rotate people around on them.
I think if we want to get a lot of people to show up we need to decide on the dates very early in advance and (preferably) not have it too close to the lan that shdwpuppet / whoever else is organizing.
One other thing, if we have bigger less frequent lans then i think that more crazy people like Willmatic and Spades would be willing to fly / drive in.

ShdSteelI'd fly in from the great south, regardless of size or location. Idk about others but personally it seems like a hassle to BYOC, although I understand the financial aspect and reasoning behind it.
Well, the issue I have is that when I book Hunter & Lucas, I need to have the EXACT numbers before I can book the venue, and it can be difficult to change them after that. Whereas if I book a hall for BYOC, I only have to worry about not selling more tickets than space in the hall.

Alright bumping this because I have an update to make, and I was waiting for the i58 threads to die out.
I found out recently, though this isn't particularly recent news according to their Facebook page, but Hunter & Lucas is closed "until further notice" as of early July. So this means in terms of planning future LANs, I cannot use them as an option because I need to work with venues I can secure at the appropriate time.
Please fill out this poll, so I know when to plan for a LAN. http://www.strawpoll.me/11143066
If you have any venue suggestions around the city, please let me know.
ONE LAST THING
LANWAR X is a LAN that happens around mid-November on the UOIT campus in Oshawa. It's a BYOC LAN with lots of different tournaments. I did not have time last year to scout out the event. If I am allowed to organize a TF2 tournament there, would this location work for people?

I'd love to go this year, Toronto/Oshawa both work.

I vote anything but Jan/Feb and getting a hall would be pretty sweet. Also I could bring a couple people from kW/Guelph when details are figured out
Btw there is https://lantastic.ca/ in a couple weeks in waterloo

I think one of my buds is still at UOIT, so I might be able to attend at Oshawa.

I live in Cambridge but if this happens, we should carpool. otherwise I'll spend a fortune on dumb bus tickets like I did for fanexpo
also now that I don't have midterms during lan events (THANKS HIDI) or other events like that, I should 100% be able to go if a lan happened in the next little while

I'd love to go to a LAN in toronto / area as long as it doesn't conflict too much with any exams, maybe bring one or two people with me idk

If there are any LANs at the university in the next little while, guelphers (and beyond) should go to that at some point too. idk which of you go to conestoga, the university or don't go to school, but even when I'm on a work term like this I live relatively close so I could hit anything like that.
or link up for drinks that could work too

As such i also say that lans when I dont have college are A+

Guelph area would be perfect, I'm closer towards that end during the year (McMaster representttt) and it'd be super cool to meet some tf2 players in the area considering how new I am to the comp scene. Most of my tf2 friends are from the west coast so I'm pretty sick of 100 ping, LAN would be an incredible experience

a lan in guelph would not bring nearly as many people out as a lan in toronto, im shocked at the number of people thinking it would be a good place to host a lan. id imagine we could have twice the people if it was hosted in a core gta city like toronto or mississauga.

I mostly pointed it out because there are already LANs at the university from the school's club, not because I think it'd be a good place to host a separate LAN
but I agree, core city is best
