So ive had a 144hz monitor for quite awhile and i cant seem to figure out how to fix a problem i have. The problem is that my monitor for some reason registers that i have dual screen so half of my shit i open i cant see because my PC claims its on my second monitor but i dont have a second monitor.
Anyone know how to fix?

Do multiple monitors show up when you right click your desktop and select display settings?
Also, go to the device manager and see what's under monitors -> there you can disable any devices that shouldn't be on there

Yes a second monitor shows up for some strange reason
I'm assuming you've already tried post #2 on this forum. If not, then definitely just try and disable it from control center.
How do i find out which is my monitor? this is what shows up

use the identify option, and a number should pop up on your display denoting which monitor it is under windows
also i dunno what 144hz you're using, but if it's the asus one, it lists itself as the pnp monitor, not the non-pnp monitor in my windows, but i'd double check just to be safe

You can change the resolution of both of the monitors separately right? Change whatever it thinks is the main one and if your resolution changes keep that one, disable the other?
the one that says Generic Non-Pnp Monitor is the fake one, did you recently update your drivers?
i updated my drivers when i got a new gfx card a week or so ago
if that monitor keeps coming back then uninstall those drivers, then go to windows update and let it install the right driver with it's configuration. It seems to be a problem with the recent anniversary update.
did you used to have a second monitor before you got this one, or recently?
i'd go with panda's suggestion and try a full driver re-install, especially if you just overlayed drivers for a new gpu on-top of old drivers rather than doing a clean installation

Did you try using your NVIDIA control center or whatever gfx card you have, rather than control panel or whatever windows settings.
never had a second monitor. my monitor plugs into the graphics card if that means anything. Also, i had to get a completely new version of windows whenever i bought my graphics card so i dont think its windows being out of date
fuck, if you never had a second monitor then idk why windows would say there's a phantom monitor connected, that's weird as hell
when you installed a new copy of windows, did you install it over your existing os or did you backup your files and do a fresh windows install?

Something someone else said should have worked by now, but to just remove it from "multi-monitor" mode.
Right click desktop > Screen Resolution/display settings > click the other ghost monitor > disable/disconnect this monitor. You may have to look for the advanced options. its more obvious in Windows 7 than Windows 10.
