Question, how many of you guys actually used the internet during the days of dialup? White webpages were common (and still are), but then again people got out more generally. I mean facebook is white by default, google, yahoo, etc. When did white start burning your eyes?

If I got a dollar for every time someone commented on the site being too white and lost a dollar every time you'd comment back in a vaguely condescending tone, I'd probably have around $0.
On topic, I think the site looks a lot more professional now.

Because I'd like to know why. Is it an age/generation difference, lighting problems, etc? It's not a problem as a preference, but to say it burns eyes/eye strain/causes eye problems is something I'd like to know about. I can understand why people would want a darker setup, but people have been pretty adamant about it being way too bright.

Its a dark border on a bright inner page, it makes it pop more, it makes look even brighter than it is.

Some people aren't in brightly lit environments and so looking at a bright screen is pretty hard on the eyes.

while a dark theme would be nice, i'll admit white text on a black background hurts my eyes more than the reverse

It's the other way around. Bright images make dark borders look darker than they are. You actually have to be looking at the border for anything light to look brighter, which you won't be doing.
Most people in this thread probably should give calibrating their monitor a try.

If the brightness is honestly hurting your eyes and you don't care for the website to look professional, you can always shift+alt+prtscrn and refresh.
You could just get decent lighting and go outside every once awhile to avoid monitor tan and light-sensitive eyes.
It's pretty unhealthy not to.

Sure, enigma whacked it up a few notches on the playing-Mirror's-Edge-at-2-am meter but it's not as eye-frying as people claim it is.
