its crippling, constant, and I'm not even worried about anything normal. I don't get nervous for exams, deadlines, or anything like that. I'm afraid for my future.
essentially, ex girlfriend of 3 years falsely accused me of rape for attention and lots of people got involved, which made me staying at my school unsafe due to threats and fights that actually got started, lots of people took her side and left me, leaving me with few friends and a huge mess to try to clean up. This was back in June. Every time someone mentions her or the situation I just shut down completely. I've been having nightmares and like, flashbacks, i guess. All kinds of fucked up shit. I don't know if this is something worth seeing a professional about or if I should just try to power through.

Stop doing stressful stuff that you are able to stop (stressful hobbies, relationships, etc). Start replacing those stressful things with healthy things (exercise, mutually beneficial relationships, etc).
Obviously won't work if you have actual anxiety issues (which you should talk to a professional about), but getting that needlessly negative stuff out of your life with do wonders, gamer.

i find stepping away for a bit and really thinking about whats bugging you makes you feel like you at least did something even if you still feel like crap afterwards. letting your mind focus on something else is another huge help for when im anxious especially late at night when i cant sleep, watching some yt or doing light reading helps calm me down enough to pass out.

exercise/meditation are both known to reduce stress, if nothing else helps you can consider talking to a doctor and getting medication but some anti-anxiety meds are addictive so be careful

Like others said, exercising and going for like a good 10-30 minute run makes me feel really good a few days before like events where there's pressure on you such as for me would be before big baseball tournaments when there are scouts there. It just makes you feel really motivated to know that you're doing something that will benefit your health and your overall feeling.
Another thing I tell myself is, if I mess up so and so, will it really affect me in the long run. Like will making one error or missing that open shot really affect me in the long run? Will being awkward and missing that chance with one girl or being embarrassed really affect you in the long run? Absolutely not.
Just take a more relaxed and open-minded approach to life and I guarantee it will help; it helped me.

It depends on the kind of anxiety - if it's cripplingly severe, treatment from a professional can massively increase your quality of life - and don't be afraid to shop around for a doctor or therapist that you like + trust.
If it's just life's normal anxieties, thinking in this way has always helped me:

go to a doctor and get meds. They will prescribe you xanax or something over the counter. it helps. also, try to distract yourself from thinking about whatever is making you anxious by thinking aobut the things around you

My counselor told me to do an exercise where i pay attention to all of my bodily reactions to your anxiety (in my case shaking and faster heart rate/breathing) and track them (nicely named "tracking"). It's helped me a lot in stressful situations where I've needed to/wanted to calm down quickly.

Literally the opposite of what you should be doing. Xanax is a temporary solution, and running away from your thoughts (which you can't really do anyway) reinforces the anxiety surrounding the unwelcome thoughts.

Your therapist's advice is to take xanax for the rest of your life and not deal with your problems? That sounds like the opposite of therapy.

Find a better therapist.
There is nothing wrong with drugs (especially at first, and maybe forever) but the goal should be temporary use of anxiolytics with longer term therapy/exposure, turning to a more normal life.
But crippling anxiety, like all mental illnesses, is a real illness, a real disease. Don't let the fact that it originates from the brain dissuade you from receiving real help. Everything everyone here said is good, exercise, diet, meaningful social interaction, accomplishing things in your life are all good. But find a therapist that works for you, perhaps a psychiatrist who you can meet with more irregularly to medicate while you work on issues with a psychologist.
Good luck my friend, you don't face this alone, reach out to friends or helpful strangers.
