So I've used the datasets created from community quickplay to generate some more accurate graphs about what maps and gamemodes are played on Valve servers and Community servers.

nice to know a quarter of people on community servers are trading or idling
nice to know a quarter of people on community servers are trading or idling
Cerdurnice to know a quarter of people on community servers are trading or idling
It's ironic really because most of the 8 year old hungarian kids playing those trade/idle servers quit the game within 10 hours of playtime, yet they make up those huge parts of the stats.

I will never understand what the fuck are all those thousands of people are doing on 2fort, imo it is literally one of the worst maps, super choky without any space to jump or flank. I feel just physically sick when I join a 2fort server.

this is less depressing than i thought it would be actually

remove 2fort from the game

Wow, that's a fuckton more people playing on MGE servers than i thought, apparently nearly more popular than all the trade/idle maps

You can grab all this information from the valve api, sometimes through undocumented methods. When I first saw teamworktf's effortsI ran my own scans to see if I got the same results and it all tallies.
However I also ran the same scans against CSGO servers. I found that they are 90% defuse mode on competitive rotation maps with 5 man teams. You can slice that any way you like it, player numbers, servers running maps, populated servers, etc, the 90% largely holds. A lot of them might be in casual mode rather than full competitive but it's basically the same game with no half time.
It was an enlightening comparison.

as awful as 2fort is in a logical, map-made sense, aesthetically it's really kinda cool

And that's why the argument that tf2 is the third most played game on steam so the player base for comp is there is flawed. Barely 8% even play actual tf2, 90% play bullshit modes.
I am genuinely intrigued what these hundreds of thousands of people are doing on these random non-tf2 related servers all day though, And why so many even exist. What's the appeal?

you cant really see that from behind 12 sentries in the intel room

2fort is one of the most played maps because everyone is familiar with it, noobs don't have a hard time understanding it, and more experienced players keep on coming back for nostalgia.

Because CTF is popular.
Why is CTF popular?
Because unlike koth and pl the timelimit won't run out any time soon and unlike pl and cp you never have to move your sentry nest or pay any attention to the objective at all.
Did you never notice that 90% of the players on Valve servers just straight up ignore the objective?

This is absolutely blowing my fucking mind. I didn't even like 2fort as a pubber who just installed his first PC game.

really, the "3rd most played game on steam" stat is so misleading when compared to CS because tf2 is a free game. like a third of the players on any given valve server likely just installed the game, and will never play it again after that day. another third are just people who downloaded the free game and accidentally launched it for an hour before realizing that it's running in the background

The steam stats are hugely inflated, at least what I can see from the server stats. There is an offset of about 20.000 players when comparing the server stats with those from steam. That means either a large portion are bots, idling in main menu or just plain wrong stats.
And yes, I've scanned ALL gameservers from Valve and Community servers out there, at least the ones reported by the gamecoordinator. You can only evade the gamecoordinator by not using Casual/serverbrowser at all, which no-one seems to do.
