The Linux kernel is nice and has many drivers built in. Here is a very cheap adapter that has great reviews, some of which mention plug-and-play use on Linux. I've never used it, but I have a router from them and it's a solid product.

Was looking at the same one before you recommended. I ordered and will update whether I can get it to work.
Also jumped through 3 flaming hoops to successfully stream Netflix on Ubuntu.

Adapter plug-n-play'd on Ubuntu and works well so far.

there is also a utility called ndiswrapper that takes the dll files of the windows drivers and sometimes makes them work. It was touchy a few years ago, but I imagine it works wonders now.

Most of the newer wireless adapters are compatible with ubuntu.

There seem to be quite a few linux compatible usb wireless cards these days! I made a page that shows the results of my testing some of the most powerful cards available for linux, including several alfa cards, and the TL-WN722N. The page is available here:

These cards might be more than you need, but the prices are pretty reasonable so might as well have the best! I trust this will be valuable for you.
