Other people have other ways of expressing how they feel, The profile picture shows your upset, if someone asks, you tell them that you don't wish to discuss it. Some people look at it different ways, if someone i know has changed their picture to something sad, i know, not to ask, because its their way of saying; 'sorry, im not in a good mood right now, I'd like to be left alone. Sorry if im being a bit mentally ill but i fail to the see any hypocrisy.
