Isn't there a hack that allows you to change that message when you leave a game?
I tried to look up "fatmanscoop" (in lowercase) and the only two accounts I got were a dude who doesn't own TF2 at all and an account that hasn't been set up.

i figured it had to be fake, no way valve would ever put a message out like that without someone like vnn being all over it in a matter of seconds

I've seen also where people send long messages where they perfectly count the number of spaces, to make it look like server side messages.
Example:
Random User: Hey Guys
fatmanscoop left the game (Hired by VALVe to test Pyro Update)
My point is, this could've have also been faked simply by a long chat message.
