They sign a contract to play on a team in their league. At that moment, you represent your team and your league. Those teams / leagues have rules you agree to when you sign the contract. Breaking the rules means paying the price.
Unfortunately, those penalties are not yet fitting of the crimes / behavior of the athletes just yet. Perhaps in time the leagues will get more harsh with punishment and set a higher standard for overpayed professional athletes they want to represent their organizations.

Domestic abuse is really difficult to prove, and often times the victim will enter into some sort of legal agreement that basically lets the people who commit these crimes off without punishment.

But the NFL also has a conduct policy that is part of NFL contracts, so not only are you faced with the same sort of punishments a normal person would be, but the NFL's conduct policy also forces them to punish you as well.
It's no different than an elementary teacher getting hit with some sort of social misconduct (public drunkenness for example). Sure their going out at night and getting hammered may not affect the kids, but their contract with their school will still include a conduct policy that will see them punished additionally.
For example in the US in the early 20th and late 19th century, teachers who were women were not allowed to be married. As part of their contract becoming a "Mrs. so and so" was grounds for immediate termination. The same went for pregnancy.
