As long as you have a decent sensor and the shape feels comfortable to you personally I don't think it matters too much.

Been using some dinky travel mouse with the extendable cord my entire TF2 career, all that matters if it has some DPI and feels good in your hand

cpi is actually one of the least important things..
the two most important factors are probably decent malfunction speed and decent perfect control speed:
(very) old sensors would just crap out on you with every flick you did because they couldn't handle the speed. and i can imagine that most cheap office mice still suffer from this.
this hasn't really big an issue for a while, though. at least, not with gaming sensors. (which is why you rarely hear anyone mention it at all.)
there's still a (big) gap in consistency and overall performance between office sensors and gaming sensors, so if you play FPS games a lot then imo it's definitely worth it to get something decent.
i mean, even the very cheap WMO or G100s use gaming-grade sensors and easily outperform any office mouse out there.

Zowie EC2-A, G303, G900 for example, these mice are not for show, to answer that portion of your question, the sensors in these mice are specifically designed to you the most accurate tracking in game. There is a reason most pro players choose to use hardware that is just the best objectively and gaming mice with great sensors are no different. It's so that their hardware isn't holding them back, so that the only thing restricting their ability to preform is how much time and effort they are willing to put into practicing and improving in the game they play.
With all that being said however, if you feel like your hardware isn't restricting your ability to preform, feel free to continue using that mouse.

a good gaming mouse would probably make you more consistent because the sensor wouldnt freak out on every flick and it wouldnt have any horrible negative accel and stuff
also dpi pretty much only matters if u use accel

"Normal" mice are utter dog shit and will limit you (accel, horrible control speed, constant spinouts, horrendous amounts of angle snapping). You absolutely should get a gaming mouse if you don't have one. Not some chinese knockoff from amazon covered in LEDs either.
Give me a budget and your hand length and width and i will make you a recommendation.
You don't need to spend a fortune to get something good but you do need to buy smart.
