I remember some mod that made the dungeons in Oblivion had some meaning, and it was fucking fantastic.

I still like Fallout 3 and NV more than the Elder Scrolls, and I wasn't THAT much of a fan of NV, but I haven't played it in ages.

Waiting for a sale you can get Fallout 3 for like 20$ I think.

also on a side note (on topic), NV "fixed" a lot of Fallout 3's problems eg improving gunplay significantly (it's still bad my FPS standards) and making the worldbuilding actually make sense, but it did have its own problems like energy weapons being useless and speech being unbalanced. those are problems that mods can easily fix, though, because they're not fundamental with the game itself but its arbitrary mechanics

I guess I'll be a voice of the opposition here. I really liked Skyrim. I don't even like videogames that much anymore but I still think Skyrim is worth the purchase. My poor broken laptop ran it at literally 5 frames per second, rendering any build outside of stealth impossible, but I still logged 200+ hours or so without ever getting past the second mission of the main quest. In fact, the only questlines I did play to completion were the Thieves' Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. I didn't touch any other factions. Mainly, I just walked around and found my own amusement. It works really well as a sandbox. If you're the type of person who can find your own motivation, it'll keep you occupied for a long long time.
Haven't played Fallout 3, so I can't make a comparison.
I did play and love Stalker: Call of Pripyat. My only qualm with CoP was its length, I would have preferred content enough to make a decent sized sandbox. What content was there, however, was excellent and one of the best games I've played in recent memory.

skyrim has such an epic lore. I beat it when i had no internet from one of the hurricanes late last year. It was fucking epic. I have played FO3 at a friends house but couldn't get into it.

Just from experience, skyrim is a must buy (i torrented it though LOL)

Tomb Raider is fun (haven't beaten it, saves got erased :c), but it's not really comparable to Skyrim or the Fallout series. It's pretty linear. Maybe the game expands to a more open world type game later on, but ~40% in and the most I was doing outside of story missions was finding treasure.

Morrowind will always be the best of the Elder Scrolls series. It has an amazing story and an intriguing, creative environment. As much as I love TES: IV and V, I'll have to admit that the complaints about those two games (Skyrim especially) feeling lifeless aren't entirely unfair. OP should seriously consider getting Morrowind and updating its graphics with mods.

STALKER games are good, Witcher games are kind of shit

As for the OP, I preferred Fallout. I might be biased against Skyrim though because of how terrible I think Oblivion is.

Don't forget, the company that made S.T.A.L.K.E.R. may not be planning to continue making games, but their forums are still active. Also, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. community is pretty active too.

Oh, and don't even get me started on all the amazing mods for this game. Try searching for AMK, ZRP, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Soup, etc. Before doing that though, always do a vanilla play through first with no mods, etc.

I tried playing shadow of chernobyl and was confused by it; the game opens with a brief cinematic opening(and by brief I mean like 2 min), then it just sort of plops you into the game with no real storyline or explanation of how the game works.

I just sort of ran around collecting weird, radioactive trash on the ground and shooting at stuff until I got bored

If you talk to the people standing around it takes about 5 minutes to figure it out. Kids these days need their hands held.

I'd go for skyrim personally because it just feels like there is more to do. Fallout 3 defiantly has a better story to it but the game gets kind of stale after a while. They are both amazing games, hopefully you can pick em both up one day.

But seriously, what part of The Witcher don't you like? I feel it's one of the few new RPGs that is actually good and comparable to the old D&D based classics.

And nothing ruins immersion like having your hand held. Part of what makes those games so successful and fun.

I haven't finished Witcher 1 yet, and haven't played 2 yet (tf2 addiction.....)

But Witcher one was AWESOME up until the final segment where they were clearly rushed for time since the project had ran out of money. Not to mention that the developer actually likes the game - so they do nice things for free like adding facial expressions and body language (bethesda can't even do that after all these years of 60$ games), free content, more dialogue, better voice actors...

Oh wait, they do what a company SHOULD do for its customers - that is - care about their product - and be proud of it.

did you play witcher 2 or are you basing your opinion on the first game? i didn't like the first game very much but loved 2, it's just a lot more polished in general. similar to cop vs soc

Mainly what I didn't like is how easy and repetitive the combat is for the entire game, that plus the fairly generic fantasy setting didn't grab me. Also I don't play many RPGs for similar reasons.

Then again I bought them dirt cheap (thanks steam sales) and I would say I did indeed get my money's worth. More what my issue is with is just The Witcher being listed with something IMO much much more interesting/satisfying

I enjoy RPGs mainly for the stories and the interactivity. I still occasionally boot up Ultima VII even though that game is old as the hills because it still has more content and exploration than most games on the market today, and that game is fucking over 20 years old now.

I get the complaint about combat to an extent. The combat system doesn't have an intricate list of combos or anything, but then again that isn't standard at all for RPGs. I'm not sure if you're talking about Witcher 1 or 2, because the interactivity in the combat system is completely different between the two games, but you'll mostly be doing the same combos over and over again. For Witcher 2 I don't understand the "easy" complaint for the combat system. On launch, there was widespread discussion about the game being too hard for people to even complete the prelude/tutorial to the game. They actually had to patch in later an arena tutorial for the game so you got a more hands on experience on how to learn combat.

I thought Witcher's story and environment was unique. I could arbitrarily call it a "generic LOTR like fantasy setting" but I could do the exact same for every game in a steampunk setting, post apocalyptic setting, space setting, etc.

I always end up killing everything that moves out of boredom in games like this
