Hey there NA community.
How long on average do your matches last in your opinion? Does it usually last an hour or does it hit the 5 round mark quite early?
Over in euro land we're having a debate to switch over NA rules. People are asking this question and I think it's a important question to answer and I thought this would be the best way to get a wide scoped answer. Not just invite but also open players.

I'd say 20-30 minutes, sometimes 40 for closer games. Matches are basically limited to an hour, but most don't go that long.

esea records stats for every match which includes match length on their website
i don't think they're cool enough to have any kind of API we can use to report on stats and do neat analysis but you could go just manually review matches if you're interested

It really just depends on if the teams have equal skill level. Close games can last an hour. One-sided games can last around 5-15 minutes.

If you are talking ESEA matches, that depends on what you count. They usually start 15 minutes late, and half time is normally far too long
But they max out at an hour of playtime, and I would say the average match falls in the 25-40 minutes of play time range.

I'd say the average of a balanced match is 40 mins

No game has ever lasted only 5 minutes... Even rolls are longer then that....

As always technical difficulties force matches to go long once in a while, but normally:
Straight roll top team vs bottom team: 10 Minutes
Average match 5-2/5-3: 30-40 Mins <-- vast majority of matches
Nail Biter: 60 mins. This means that it went into overtime or took a very long time to finish.

25 minutes normally, could be as long as 40 if we're trying new stuff, might just quit after an hour if she's bad

You'll see hour long matches for sure, but in the lower leagues, but even those are uncommon. In the higher leagues you will very rarely see matches go past 40 minutes, but if they do, they're usually nail-biters. Also, I can't remember the last time a team in invite went to the golden cap round.
A quick calculation using stats from the ESEA page, in 14 matches (2 forfeits didn't count) tri_ on Chess Club played 7:04:27, roughly 424 minutes. He played 14 matches, which means 30.29 minutes/match, for the 4th place team in ESEA Invite. This includes the Gravelpit games, which usually play a little longer. Eye-balling the mean deviation from the average time, it's probably (30 +/- 7) minutes for 5cp maps.

There are games that have reached halftime in 5 or less though.
Keep in mind KotH matches take a murderous amount of time.

TBH I'd prefer the Euro rules over the NA rules, with the NA ruleset the win limit seems artificial. Whereas the Euro rules let you keep playing so long as one team doesn't get a lead of 5, feels much more organic in a lot of ways.
