Sadly it's not a hoax, his wife posted the news on Twitter. https://twitter.com/GennaBain/status/999785407087808512?s=20
May he rest in peace.

I know he had cancer and believe it became un-treatable at some point. It really is awful.

Cancer
Edit: He got diagnosed in 2014, and his chemo stop working last October. I copied what his Wikipedia says in the spoiler.

In late April 2014, Bain released a vlog announcing he had a precancerous mass in his colon; the first indications of bowel cancer, a condition with which two of his grandparents had also been diagnosed.[11][12] A month after this vlog, Bain revealed that he had "full blown cancer"[13] and later began chemotherapy and radiation treatment.[14]
On 7 April 2015, Bain announced via Twitter that his CT-Results showed a complete remission,[15] [16]meaning no evidence of additional existing cancer could be found. However, on 15 October, Bain announced the cancer had metastasized to his liver and was considered inoperable.[17][3][18]
On 23 September 2016, he reported that his cancer had mutated, and a targeted treatment had shrunk his liver tumor by over 50%, from 5 cm to 2 cm.[19][20]
In October 2017, Bain appeared on the H3 Podcast, during which he discussed at length the current state of his cancer. He described his condition as "stable" (meaning the cancer was still present, but not spreading), and that it was stage 4 cancer.[21] On 22 November, Bain tweeted that his chemotherapy had stopped working, but that there were other types he could try. He also noted that the cancer hasn't spread, but that the growth started again.[22]
On 18 April 2018, Bain tweeted that he had been hospitalized for extreme back pain, where he learned that the pain was being caused by his cancer growing and applying pressure on his spine. He also confirmed that he would be participating in a clinical trial to combat the disease.[23][24] On 30 April, Bain's support group posted to Reddit on his behalf that he has become resistant to all forms of conventional chemotherapy and that his liver is failing. Because of this, he is disqualified from clinical trials he previously qualified for. He has shifted his treatment plan to a palliative one, but will continue to pursue treatment options if a trial compatible with his failing liver becomes available. Additionally, Bain announced his retirement from game criticism, citing that he is no longer capable of performing his work to a level that is satisfying to him and his fan base. He clarifies that he is not, however, retiring from streaming and producing the Co-optional Podcast.[25][26]

He seemed like a good guy. Hopefully he's not suffering anymore and I hope his wife will be able to cope.

guy kept working and fighting all the way up to the end, thinking about nothing but his family, always kept it real and spoke his mind.

He may have made an astronomic amount of high quality reviews of/looks at video games which were actually helpful in trying to decide if you wanted to buy a game, but what I'll always remember are the videos where he'd call out bad practices from the gaming industry, dumb cultural things in the gaming community or go in-depth/have a discussion on all things related to gaming. It will be very difficult to replace what he brought to gamers, because not many people are able to be that objective(and pointing out their own subjectivity like he always tried to do) or offer as many perspectives as he tried to.

Respect for him doing what he loved for so long. One of the few critics who actually was reliable in their reviews.
