live polls during casts

this is probably the wrong section, but i noticed during the latest 2gd dota cast they had multiple live polls running during their recent games.

do you guys think tf2 would benefit from interactive questions like"

"does b4nny kill anybody with this kritz?"
"will mixup defend last after wiping at mid?"
"how many times will shade drop lansky?"
"how many rounds will enigma lose before he switches to heavy?"
"is brad controlling the flank?"
"will tagg ever kill clockwork in a 1v1?"

or does tf2 have too much going on to have this- because it really seemed to be pretty fun to speculate with other viewers during these games

to be honest I don't think it'd be that fun.

TF2 is too fast paced compared to a MOBA where there isn't always a ton of action going on at once.

actually I think the only time this would ever work is during a granary stalemate but what the fuck would you poll during that time

Games are definitely too fast-paced to take live polls. At best those polls would only be up for 5 minutes at a time. The idea is fun but doesn't match up well with how comp TF2 works. Best alternatives would be to take polls before games go live and/or have the casters ask these questions during games for the chat to answer.

I feel like this could be really interesting, but with how fast paced TF2 is, I don't think it would work.

Plus, the casters always have something to talk about.

Lights_the casters always have something to talk about.

Uh, no. Stalemates on granary, gully last, snakewater last, process last, gravelpit, etc. It's really not that bad of an idea, just requires someone to go out and do it.

i think you meant to write "djc always has something to talk about"

off the top of my head, holds during koth/during rollouts/pauses/halftime/gpit are some pretty dull/uneventful times

They would be nice for half time and pre game.

This would be AMAZING for pauses and stuff. Maybe have an IRC bot constantly poll the people who press 1 or 2 in the chat for answers ("Press 1 for Yes and 2 for No") and update it live on screen.

I actually saw it earlier today and had to quickly make it myself.

https://github.com/zooob/node-irc-livevote

Joins an irc channel (like Twitch.tv chat) and shows poll results live on browser.

For reference, here is the GD Studio cast. Here the poll is actually up only for less than a minute and it takes very little screen space. Really nice for viewer interaction, chat went always crazy.

Unless there's a pause or stalemate, I can't see the polls being super effective. As lights says, it's pretty fast-paced. The polls would become stalemate indicators.

I'm scratching my head trying to think of a way to deploy a poll effectively mid-action. DM-based stuff is right out, since people can get near instagibbed sometimes. As for tactics, unless the casters know for sure what strategy a team is trying, the poll might become void seconds after it's displayed. I suppose we could flash a "who will win mid?" during the rollout, but that's literally the only thing the casters talk about anyway so it'd seem redundant.

It's an interesting tool for sure, but trying to figure out what to do with it will take some brainstorming.

Polls can be done tastefully. You want to have a small amount of polls (1-2 per half at most). You'd want to hide them for the most part though until there's a good point in time to show it (ie stalemates), and it should give the people watching sufficient time to have responded, even if they were 5 minutes late. The NBA does it in the score bar, but that's at the bottom of the screen so it might need to be arranged for this.

A couple of thoughts:

1) Having a poll on the screen just just too much clutter, so you need to work out a tasteful way to do it. It's surprisingly difficult (I do think GD Studio did an excellent job but they also have gear that we don't).

2) Does anyone really use them? Multiplay actually had a live poll system for i43 and i45, but they only got like ~5 votes every time they were used, even during the final with 3k+ viewers.

3) What could you actually poll on? As said above, TF2 is a really fast-paced game, so it'd be quite difficult.

I can see two types of polls being done: Play-based polls and rollout polls.

Play polls can be done each half, and can be things like "Who will drop uber first?" and the like. Whereas rollout polls run during each round and determine whose onboard cam gets used for the cast, something simple and fun to do.

To Skyride's 2nd point, for something to be used, it must be simple and quick to use. Perhaps a bot recording chat responses and spitting the results to a webpage or a file could be useful.

OR even... automagically setting the camera... >_>
