I don't want to come off as excessively pessimistic, since I do love this event, and it is sick to see all these old faces coming back, but last year there was backlash over the emphasis on PUBG and Overwatch. This year, 8 of your 9 announced guests are Overwatch celebrities, and the 9th is a successful Fortnite streamer. This, and the most popular Team Fortress personality is still persona non grata at an event ostensibly about the community coming together for a good cause.
I guess I'd just like a concrete statement whether you guys are trying to take ToTH in a direction with more general appeal, as opposed to being the community thing it has been.

You have a point but just because they are now successful doing their thing in ow doesn't mean they don't mean anything to the tf2 community. There are still plenty of relevant tf2 personalities showing up to the event anyways so I don't really see an issue.

While I do not enjoy watching the event because of the emphasis on other games it is first and foremost a charity. Appealing to more audiences especially the big games is extremely important for its success.

b4nny? While he is popular he isn't the greatest personality. Also has he ever been there? There's probably a very good reason for this and I reckon it's tied to him being an asshole

Some of you have expressed distaste in seeing certain/other games than TF2 at ToTH (and that's absolutely understandable), I'd like to ask you if you actually watch for what's happening in game or for attendees interacting with each other ?

Every year we are going to try new things and branch out. Last year we tried Overwatch and PUBG. We had talent that was well rehearsed in Overwatch, and PUBG was the hot new thing that everyone played, including our staff. From a statistical donation and viewer numbers standpoint, both events at their worst did as good as all of our events on average, and much better than the events we cut to bring them on board. We also tried some miscellaneous games, some did alright and some were super successful.
Yes, we are trying to take Tip of the Hats in a direction with more broader appeal, but still keep the base event centered around the idea of community. However, TotH has been leaning towards variety for a while, and will not have room to fit every single niche community on the internet. As much as we love certain aspects of the game, we do not have the time for it all. Our main focus is to continue to raise as much money as we can for Camp One Step and grow the event to the point where it can stand on it's own. Being tied down to one game, or even a specific series of games, limits the outreach of our event and our cause. That said, Team Fortress 2 will always be a part of TotH. You can fully expect TF2 to be a part of our event significantly this year.
In regards to who you're referring to as the most popular TF2 personality, I genuinely have no idea who you're talking about and I'm not going to name drop out of speculation. We are still announcing players and personalities, stay tuned!

I'd simply just hate to see events removed that the community loves, I.e. Jumping, surfing and Dota fortress (pls?) for this variaton. I'd be more than happy to see less TF2 pubs in the event for the sake of other games.

Jumpers basically plan their event every year and it's always bonkers. It aint going anywhere.
Surf will also be in this year's event.
Dota fortress is a logistical nightmare but it's a pretty great way to include a lot of people and wrap up the event so it'll be the "finale" again.

Torn between wanting more wholesome community TF2 content for selfish enjoyment reasons or embracing the popularity of other games that will bring in more donations 4 da kidz
Hopefully a mutually enjoyable mix of the two. Excited either way though.

I didn't really play the other games that were played last year but I still watched because of the cast + all the goofs that will inevitably happen. Toth will be great, just like it is every year! Can't wait

While TOTH was birthed from the TF2 community and is a wonderful event for us, it needs to be stated that the most important thing coming from this event is the creation of opportunity for these children. The most selfish thing we could ask for as a community is to keep this a TF2 majority event.
To everyone at TOTH, thank you so hard for working year after year to make this happen. Do what you think is best.

If we could get the new talent to host/hype up TOTH that'd be really nice. Like what seagull did for i58, except maybe a bit better executed. Maybe them streaming at TOTH setups or something. That probably wouldn't work but if we can use their viewership to reach new players and plug comp tf2/tf2 in general it could help a lot.

I think even couch games like Mafia, Heads up, charades, etc would be really fun to watch with people you don't often see outside of your normal video game stream.
AMA's are also cool too, I really enjoyed the Froyo one from i53
Regardless, super excited for TOTH this year just like every other year

I absolutely support these guys if their goal is to raise more money this way, but if you don't expect Overwatch players to care about your TF2 event, you certainly wouldn't expect TF2 players to care about an Overwatch event.
And while I don't resent ToTH becoming more conscious of mass appeal any more than I resent other big events like AGDQ that attract wide audiences, it is natural to feel the sting of losing yet another "our thing" to Overwatch and to the changing fashions of the industry in general.
Good luck to Lange and everyone, anyways. You guys are doing this for the right reasons.

What makes you think this is becoming an Overwatch event ? There's a single guest so far that has zero TF2 history
It's honestly baffling to me, the organisers (Budsquad) are inviting their friends who are also public figures, you're ignoring **human relationships** just to complain about what these guests have been doing the past year

When I say community I mean an ephemeral identification with the community surrounding this game, not the budsquad's personal relationships. Both valid definitions, but I'm not their friend. So although it's awesome to see all these cool people who left TF2 come back for charity, and while I'm glad that the seanbud gets to see his old buddy Star again, I'm not sure how their human relationship is supposed to enhance my enjoyment of watching them play cards against humanity.
Last year TF2 was placed in undesireable time slots to attract primetime eyeballs to the more masses-ready content. Symbolic significance in that. I'm curious to see if this will be a progressive thing or if you've already found the mix of content you wanted.
Again, I've felt the need to be critical here, but I do support the work you do. I don't even think we disagree on anything of substance. All I'm saying is if somehow your viewership and donations go up during DotaFortress, you'll know why.
