FBTF shuts its doors permanently

September 29, 2019

After nearly twenty seasons of operations, dating all the way back to the early years of 2008, the Brazilian Team Fortress Federation (FBTF) have announced that they will be closing their doors on October 15th following the conclusion of their final ongoing Highlander season.

While the Brazilian TF2 scene never came into fruition in the vein as its American, European, and Australian counterparts — who have all sent representatives to more than one international LAN event — Brazilian TF2 nonetheless maintained an active competitive scene. While other leagues have propped up in the past years, including Chapelaria and UGC's South American leagues, FBTF remained a long-standing institution of South American TF2 for over 11 years with its LBTF2 league.

Head admin Aratinga gave a statement on the passing of the league, and shed some light on the challenges faced by staff.

This decision was thoroughly discussed by all present members of the FBTF staff and had its approval granted by the founding member of the federation, our old friend “tdf”. The biggest characteristic all our leagues always had was whether personal conflicts, misunderstandings or hindrances were imposed, who always reigned at the end was the strongest, most apt team. It was something absolute.

With the first place achieved in the tournament, there were no doubts about the capacity of the six winning members and the subs that eventually had to play when necessary. However, the reality we see today is different. [...] Since we could no longer foster what we originally defended, since our spaces were being used as refuge to people who abandoned any ambition of improvement and carelessly spread hate, since there are no longer players we see as capable to continue the hard and important staff work — rather it be because they are inexperienced or lack wit — and, finally, since the company which administers our beloved game really doesn’t care about it anymore, reaching this decision was not strange at all.

We also are human beings and, naturally, we also get tired. We here end the path of this community that, at least for me, brought many fond memories and good friends. Of course, there also were sad and bitter moments. But I can only feel proud to be part of this little fracture of the history we’ve written in this game. I thank each staff member who worked hard and every player who participated and gave it all in our leagues, competing for prizes that, most of the time, were mere in-game medals.

The statement ends with some thanks, and a message for all those in the Brazilian scene.

If you are a player who is just starting now and randomly found this text, don’t worry, the game is still alive. As long as there are twelve players to play a pug, this game will not die. If you are a player that saw this place as a safe space and had respect for the people who sacrificed their precious time to deliver something new to the community, I am so sorry that things had to end this way, from the bottom of my heart.

Now, if you are a player who hates our organization and couldn’t care less about this happening, I can only say to you: welcome to the beginning of the end. It is the first day of the rest of your life. As the last head staff of FBTF, I’d like to leave a last message to all who still play this game: we, as TF2 players, never really aimed at fame, success, money or things like that. What we really aimed at and will be always aiming at is the meatshot, the headshot, the airshot.

In the name of all the staff and moderators who passed through here (it’s a huge list!);

In the name of the moderators who helped us a lot in this last season: Bunny, Dook, Red;

In the name of the present staff members: Aratinga, Isner, Néss, Temujin,

Thank you all. GG WP.

You can read the original Portuguese statement here.

With NA having issues and SA closing doors it seems the darkest days might still lie in front of the community. Really sucks to hear that another chapter of the book is coming to an end but huge thanks to all of the SA people who put time and effort in. It was hard in NA at times, but that's nothing compared to the difficulty that SA had.The fact that SA had a scene at all is just a testament to how much people actually cared.

A lan with no Budget, no prizepool and no resources (apart from PCs) provided to the organizers, who are once again not getting paid a dime. BTS is merely taking a small gamble on TF2 with minimal investment (House they already own + PCs they also already own) to see how it works out. This isn't a sign of a "healthy" or "thriving" scene, you're relying on the charity and dedication of a handful of people to make anything happen. It's likely that after this lan the gap in NA TF2 Lans will remain, but then again, if there was ever a shot at showcasing TF2 to the world again, it's now.

Don't think SA tf2 was alive in some moment, at least since i started(2013) playing tf2 SA was dead. This post don't change anything. FBTF diying don't change anything, we just don't have more people who wants to do or can't do. Myself include. I miss the cups with 3 teams in elite and the no scrims thing.
If you are BR and wants to play you have 2 another leagues to play and the "vanilla fortress" have prize pool. I will not miss FBTF so, rest in peace.

You have no idea what is going on with BTS or how much of an investment they've made for this event, nor do you have any idea how hard some people have worked to make this event happen. Fuck off.

Here I can start with a few things:

- An entire studio space that can now not be used for any of their other big events on their calendar for that weekend for a period of three days. Do you have any idea how much this would normally cost for a studio of this caliber? Of course not.

- An entire production setup that easily trumps anything TF2 has ever had in terms of broadcast production budget, as well as gear that BTS now has tied up for that weekend and can't lease to any of their partners.

You're delusional if you think they're just giving us PCs and making a low-risk gamble.

EDIT: Oh, also a ton of their staff assisting us on-site at no cost to us. BTS has a ton of professionals in the esports place that are extremely talented that will be helping us on-site for free during that weekend, including their content team which is generally agreed is the best in the industry.

Gear and studio space that would have gone unused anyways, so might aswell dip your toe in an untapped market by other esports companies so far to see how it goes.

I'm not taking anything away from people like you that work hard to make another TF2 Lan happen, but someone using this Lan as an example to claim the the game is still kicking is misleading at best, you're not establishing a sustainable tournament circuit, you're creating a one off Lan that will probably not make the organizers any money. leading to them pulling out of the game again, merely my prediction on the matter.

You yourself should know best that TF2 can't possibly satisfy a big organizer like BTS at all with our small viewership, which is in part the fault of the limiting format and at times boring viewer experience, building something sustainable out of this is unlikely.

You literally said they're providing you a studio and gear, stuff that they already own and would probably have not used during that time anyways, the only thing they're actually risking is the time of their staff, which will most likely not result in any future investment from BTS.

Fuck off yourself, kindest sir.

Apologies in advance for the super derailing of this thread, but this needs to be addressed.
On topic, really unfortunate to see another league bite the dust, especially in a less prominent region like SA. Hopefully we can see something else bud up in the future.

They are taking a large loss by not charging for using a near six figure equipment setup, even ignoring the staff that they're paying out of pocket for. Comparable broadcast studio setups usually charge hundreds per hour, and even then still many would require rental of multiple broadcast quality capture cards for observer PCs to be compatible with the equipment (in pro broadcast BNC connected SDI cables are standard compared to HDMI for consumer grade capture solutions, which are far cheaper).
Saying it would go "unused anyways" doesn't really mean anything when in any other situation to get proper TV broadcast equipment would be exorbitantly expensive. This combined with having Dashner, someone who has years of paid professional esports directing and has experience working on top broadcasts like Overwatch World Cup, Dreamhack, and Blast Pro Series (on top of being the uncontested best director/producer in TF2 of all time) directing and producing is definitely not something to be taken for granted.

Also, saying this is proof the game is still kicking is as far from misleading as you could be. I have not seen this much community hype for a LAN event since i58, and it was only announced a few days ago. I have seen everyone from invite players to open players to tf2center lobby Lord's to even pubbers bringing it up and getting excited, and because of the vast scope of the Beyond the Summit brand, members of other esports communities I've talked to have also taken interest and seem to think this shows promise for the game. I won't pretend like this is going to be the thing that wakes Valve up and makes them give a shit, but in terms of name value, production value, community hype, intercontinental interests, and raw energy going into the organizing efforts, this has potential to go down in TF2's history as either the biggest LAN ever or the start of a new era.

If you don't take personal interest or hold the opinion that the community is dying, I can sympathize. But a new event from a world-renowned brand with the best people in the community running it is definitely not a sign the game is dying, and it's really confusing how a bigger, better event for the community is seen as a negative for you.

Weird how this turned into bts drama but w/e.

Calling our scene "dead" or "alive" doesnt really change the outcome of the situation. The fact is, we are a small-sized community without as many resources when compared to na/eu, its hard to find scrims due to the lack of teams, and things get even more complicated when you climb up to the higher levels where you've got like 1-2 decent enough teams to play against. You can be considered lucky if your team manages to scrim 1 night a week while playing in the highest div. Despite all that people still spent their free time into organazing leagues/tournaments/cups just for the sake of doing it, because they really like the game and still want to play it in a competitive level. Dealing with arrogant selfish manchilds is part of every league admin career, nothing special about that. But trust me, It gets even worse when you have a div with 3 teams only and every time someone dislikes a certain decision made by the admins they will threat folding the team so they either have to do what this certain team wants or the tournament will be dead.

Shittalking and banters have always been part of the scene, i think we can even say its something cultural, as its very common in football matches and other sports as well. But people know when to do it and where, well, at least they used to. Nowadays people have totally lost track on what's acceptable and what's not. To a point where they will get your number and start calling just to annoy you and/or go through all your social medias in an attempt to gather pictures of yourself with the sole purpose of harassing and humiliating people publicaly. It's totally understandable why such actions were taken.

But don't worry, FBTF isnt the only south american league, you can now choose between a league run by a scammer/ex-ddoser that is constantly trying to demote people "for fun", or a league run by pubbers with very little competitve experience that became a joke for making a 2d in-game medal.

Might not be the end, but it's certainly the beggining of it.

MisterDannyGear and studio space that would have gone unused anyways, so might aswell dip your toe in an untapped market by other esports companies so far to see how it goes.

Fuck off yourself, kindest sir.

damn u were ok until that last line

alright I didn't actually mean to derail this whole thread but since its happening

pugs were popping today idk the game doesn't feel that dead

this wasn't "All of tf2 is on fire everything is fine"

sandblastSA can get back on their feet 100% just believe and someone take control and run something. people will follow if they actually care.

this is just the most pandering thing I've ever read.

With NA having issues and SA closing doors it seems the darkest days might still lie in front of the community. Really sucks to hear that another chapter of the book is coming to an end but huge thanks to all of the SA people who put time and effort in. It was hard in NA at times, but that's nothing compared to the difficulty that SA had.The fact that SA had a scene at all is just a testament to how much people actually cared.

yo BTS is hosting TF2 btw :D game is still kicking. we still have a NA league. SA can get back on their feet 100% just believe and someone take control and run something. people will follow if they actually care.

let's say that BTS is a masssive success and revitalizes the game. do we even want that?

our scene is organic, mostly ran by inhouse, made-by-us-for-us leagues. the fact that several of those leagues have died- with the presupposition that BTS is a miracle of a lan- means that the scene will likely drastically change and centralize away from our own community. as, in this case, bigger esports orgs and probably the primary league being shifted to a large org that we have little say of how it is ran. and while the influx of potentially new people will be great if this all works out, it's done at the expense of alienating ourselves from a competitive scene that we've built for ourselves to maximize the fun we get out of the game.

i know this is gonna get downfragged, hard, but while the tf2 community at large is sadly dwindling and waning, its led by and ran by people who care about it. multitudes of content creators, community server admins, not to mention the players who largely play for their own enjoyment than the potential to, if they make it at the top, turn it into a career. (i'm definitely FOR players getting paid btw, it's obviously a huge plus in this pros-"cons" list i have in my head- playing this game at a high level and entertaining people on twitch is fucking labor)

not to mention the rampant toxic attitudes that plague even the highest divisions of play in every major tf2 league... that shit will be exposed, and if you like that facet of tf2 competitive "culture" (which, why would you...) say goodbye to having a complete lack of accountability in what you say and do

[*] to FBTF closing operations. it's sad to see that regions of the world particularly marginalized by most of the esports sphere of consciousness losing their footing in terms of losing their leagues.

With NA having issues ....

yo BTS is hosting TF2 btw :D game is still kicking. ...

A lan with no Budget, no prizepool and no resources (apart from PCs) provided to the organizers, who are once again not getting paid a dime...

You have no idea what is going on with BTS or how much of an investment they've made for this event, nor do you have any idea how hard some people have worked to make this event happen...

Gear and studio space that would have gone unused anyways, so might aswell dip your toe in an untapped market by other esports companies so far to see how it goes...

Fuck off yourself, kindest sir.

All I got from this garbage was:

Stop liking TF2 for being TF2, because TF2 will always be TF2 except when it isn't, then it can't be TF2 if it wants to be TF2. Let the TF2 guys who TF2 real hard, TF2 with non TF2 for fun because it's fun. Except don't let TF2 be TF2, it must be TF2 SPORT. Fuck you if you TF2 otherwise. TF2 will never not be not TF2 because it never was not TF2. Nothing will change TF2. Not even TF2. Can ya'll be more salty about everything? Some good points made here, but seriously, can y'all unwind your fucking panties?

am just salty at everybody not looking at the fact TF2 is for real dying and we're next.

and rip powah's homeland, gabor bless

I'll try to give some more perspective into how bad it is here in Brazil.

I'm friends with (and am in the same team as) one of the staff members of FBTF who is also a long-time veteran of BR Comp TF2 and he told us that, even while he was in the hospital for recovery, he was still being constantly harassed and insulted by man-children. No wonder the staff of FBTF don't have the motivation to keep going.

Even though everyone has already pointed out, I want to express as well how sad and disappointed I am that this community once again has driven itself to its doom at the point leagues had to be shut down. No wonder why truly valuable admins would rather stop working for free for the sake of the community's entertainment than choosing to keep withstanding constant harassments, ddosings and tons of other shit of other players whose only purpose on life is to shit on other people's work for fun and personal satisfaction. I've experienced that myself when Chapelaria saw its death and it's happening all over again.

I want to publicly appreciate all of these years of hard work the (true) admins have put selflessly for the enjoyment of the players throughout the entire history of the South American TF2 competitive scene. Feeling this powerless when it comes to trying to make everything stay alive is not something nice, especially when you love this game so much and want everyone to love it as much as you do. I guess this community will get what it deserves.

It's a shame FBTF is going to its end after years of existence. I have lots of good memories and also some bad memories during my time playing and organizing it. I was one of the staff members in 2013 that raised back the scene after the "ddos era" (yeah, back in 2010/2012 the tf2 community was CONSTANTLY being striked by ddos attacks in pugs, also some retards thought that using this as threat was a good to achieve personal goals), we brought back coverage, interviews, streams, and introduced in-game medals...

In my opinion, FBTF was one of the best league I ever played, even with its strenghts and flaws. I also organized some of them. We've have stopped people abusing small flaws they could found on the rules, supported some teams to avoid disbanding (this was a very hard task though), got some sponsorship to provide servers, distributed medals and constantly looking for good feedback to make some improvements for the next seasons. Good times I think. Unfortunately, some banned, brain-damaged butthurt "players" find ways to threaten, harass and humiliate us, but it's all in a day's work.

crgDon't think SA tf2 was alive in some moment, at least since i started(2013) playing tf2 SA was dead.

Maybe you are getting these information by someone not so trustworthy, this tf2 dead thing started since the game was stated as free by Valve, with a lot of complaints about that. SA scene wasn't as great as NA and EU, but still fun and challenging. As years goes on, less people join the game at the same time more people leave it, affecting the competitive strength gradually. The SA scene will only be dead when we do not have 12 players to play a simple pug like aratinga said.
FBTF has a lot of history regarding SA league scene, if you do not like it because of the lack of scrims and players' interest about the game you do not have to blame the league.

Sad to hear about FBTF closing shop, hopefully some Organizers in SA step up and keep things rolling. I know everyone in the TF2 community really wants to see a SA 6s team at an international event sometime.

HMU if there's any games needing casting.
