I know there is no real transparency right now but here’s what I know. BTS could still happen. They have the staff necessary to run the event. What I assume happened is samiface told the BTS organization to cancel the whole thing. I’ve spoke with one of the admins and they are trying to re-recommend the event to the BTS organization. Fingers crossed that they keep the event alive since so many people put their time and money towards it. They might have a better answer my Monday if they event can happen still.

Just find a esports venue in the area and hold it under a different name. People already bought their tickets and the prize pot was comunity funded anyways. We have had how many LANs without BTS? This isn't the end of the world.

Considering that they weren't providing the prizepot and the casting ect was all going to be done by the community i am struggling to see what it is BTS was supposedly providing us that we didn't already have (besides the motivation)? Why do people care so much about these supposedly big esports names? We haven't had sponsors in this game since like 2011. Get over it. If you are playing for the money or efame find a newer game.

UPDATE - 11/9/19 7:00 PM EST: Remaining BtSTF2 staff members are attempting to salvage the event and are engaging with BeyondTheSummit with this in mind. No promises can or should be made at this point regarding the future of the event, but attempts are being made to track which players and teams could still attend.

The staff would like to apologize to BeyondTheSummit, players, sponsors, and others in the community who have been affected by this incident. Behavior that harms members of our community will not be tolerated and moving forward we must improve how we handle all aspects of such incidents better.

Any updates will be shared.

imagine if the organizers actually took any money, so on top of people losing money to flights and hotels, they'd also lose it to something short of an elaborate money laundering scheme

This would’ve been great for TF2, I hope that we can find an opportunity like this again and that it falls into better hands

I don't know if this has been said before, and I haven't done more than lurk on these forums in a year but it needs to be said if it hasn't:

If admin reactions to being called out for the improper handling of a player ban (regardless of who is right in that context. My experience with alfa in stream chats was always on the cuff and semi-cordial) is enough to make them throw their hands in the air, cry "boo hoo, everyone should just do the event without me!" and then nuke the event another organization was willing to go out on a limb to assist us in organizing, clearly, we should have not trusted them to organize the event in the first place.

Seriously, can we as a community just start electing some level-headed ambassadors with no drama attached? I don't care how good they are at the game, or how often they've been involved in production or whatever, just get some nice, level headed community members into power and start feeding them resources. Seriously. Drama from community organizers has been plaguing us since at least 2011.

The problem is that we as community organizers are not elected. We are the people who are willing to put the time and effort and (significant amounts of) personal money into this game. With very few exceptions, no one has gotten paid for their involvement in the TF2 scene, and even those few that have will tell you that they did not make a positive return on their investment.

Every project I've ever helped with has had an open call for volunteers. In almost every case, people with no real skillset other than patience and willingness to herd cats for 2-3 hours have been welcome. Every time we get a flood of positive responses then no one shows up, people flake, we end up with the same core dozen or so people doing everything. That's how I ended up doing servers for every NA TF2 LAN for like 4 years. Its not a complex job, anyone who has ever put in rcon commands and seen a linux terminal could do what I do, and probably better, but no one else seems to want to sit in a corner for the entirety of LAN and keep things moving.

The people who are "ambassadors" are really more like organizers. Samiface worked super hard and leveraged contacts she's made in the industry to try and help get this off the ground. You couldn't "elect" anyone into her position.

That's fair but doesn't address the problem where people who organize things are getting involved in forum drama.I was merely proposing a possible fix, but you appear to have acknowledged what I suspected, people flaking their proposed responsibilities.

CBTJust find a esports venue in the area and hold it under a different name. People already bought their tickets and the prize pot was comunity funded anyways. We have had how many LANs without BTS? This isn't the end of the world.

The reality is that even without funding a big prize pool, these orgs lose money on TF2 LANs, and massively subsidize what should be the ticket price. I mean I'd hope that the remaining crew can pull something together but to say that it would be simple/easy/cheap is just not the case.

I think you turbo nerds are overcomplicating things that don't need to be. Back in my day we rented a fire hall, grabbed a few 24 port switches and it was just as fun as any "modern esports event" i have been to. We are not a big esport and the sooner we get over that and just start having fun with it the better off we will all be.

I think you are underestimating what it costs to put on an event to even the small scale people want. PC rentals can cost thousands for 8 teams. Venues are not cheap at all and to rent them out costs thousands. Streaming and broadcasting hardware to stream the event out can cost thousands. Putting on an 8 team event in a warehouse would still probably run you 10-15k before any prize pool or travel expenses.

What ever happened to BYOPC?

Venues are not cheap at all and to rent them out costs thousands.

I can rent out a fire hall for a few hundred a night.

Streaming and broadcasting hardware to stream the event out can cost thousands.

I would assume everyone who would be interested in casting already has a PC and a microphone. I don't know about you but i was perfectly happy with the production quality we had in 2009. Once again i will state we are not a big esport and we shouldn't be out to impress anyone.

Like really who are we trying to impress? Valve? Non existent sponsors? Fuck em.
I mean i could be totally wrong about this but last i checked most people go to lan to play vidya games, meet up with friends, and get drunk. We don't need to be all fancy about it.

We possibly have teams coming from EU and SEA. BYO isnt viable for them and many of the NA players are not local as it is.

I can rent out a fire hall for a few hundred a night.

And if we did that I don't think many people would be interested in showing up. Its a catch 22, it needs to be to a minimum level or people will not bother.

BYOC isn't viable for everyone and on top of that you need lighting, cameras, switchers and audio setups. None of that shit is cheap.

There is a certain level of quality expected from the community at this point, and maybe you are right people need to expect less and we should go back to mumblecasts or something. But the fact of the matter is many people will not be happy with that and the event will either be ignored or people will bitch about how its not up to standard. Fucked if we do, fucked if we dont really.
