Might have been a bad move on Pelosi's part. The impeachment will die in Senate, Trump will surely get acquitted, and we may even see a situation like 1999, where Clinton regained immense support after being voted to be impeached. Wouldn't surprise me if Trump wins in 2020 due to this.

I think this is a bit exaggerated and I don't know for SURE it will backfire, but I definitely don't think it will go anywhere or reduce trump's popularity that much

the best case for impeachment, aside from it generally being a moral thing to do to a president so cartoonishly corrupt, is that it could potentially offer the dems the ability to air dirty laundry on televised hearings a la brett kavanaugh

but I HIGHLY doubt this ukraine story is capturing peoples' imaginations the same way a story about rape would. I mean this shit isn't in the top 50 worst things trump has ever done

also doesn't help that pelosi, adam schiff et al. keep voting to give trump more money and power (NDAA, ICE funding, patriot act, etc.)

>Trump locks kids in cages, separting them from their parents
>Trump is accused of sexual assault
>Trump makes racist comments
>Trump embezzles tons of money into his own businesses

Democrats : silence

>Trump talks about investigating Bidens son, a member of the political establishment

Democrats: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Further proof that the political-aristocrat class will complictly go along with the status quo until one of their own is threatened. What he's getting impeached for is probably not even in the top 10 worst things he's done this year

Hes interfering with an election that takes place in under a year, I doubt Biden specifically had anything to do with it

Plenty of Democrats do recognize all the shit Trump does and call him out for it. Doesnt mean you can impeach him for being racist. Using presidential power to strengthen his own personal political power? That's impeachable

But making millions upon millions by having government personnel stay at his properties isn't? What happened to the emoluments clause? Carter and his peanut farm?

Basically what I'm saying is that despite all the illegal shit he does no movements were made against him until he specifically went after Biden.

Yes, but it's also significantly more difficult to prove and Pelosi had to be absolutely certain before even considering beginning this process

Trump personally handed over everything needed to make this impeachment pass, and its STILL going to be swept under the rug by the senate

The goal isn't to target Trump. The goal is to uphold the constitution and this is just too blatant to ignore

mustardoverlordalso doesn't help that pelosi, adam schiff et al. keep voting to give trump more money and power (NDAA, ICE funding, patriot act, etc.)

Do you think that it's because they're trying to balance their own scales a bit when it comes to Trump? surely if they kept on vetoing everything that Trump attempts, the republicans could spin it further that it's just a hit job and they've always been against him.

I say this because during the hearings there was a speech from someone, I can't remember his name (he was an older democrat and high up I think), that was saying that Schiff and himself had voted against previous articles of impeachment (and around 60% of democrats voted against previous ones as well) so they are only doing so now because it's the right thing to do. It seems like they are aware that if they'd constantly went against everything that Trump tried to do whilst in office it would make the angle that the republicans would use about them being against everything Trump has done a lot stronger.

Honestly this is a great show, probably on par with The Wire.

In what world did the democrats be silent over those issues?

- Comments like "Good guys on both sides" was very vocal feedback, which caused Trump to try to backpedal (but didn't really)
- "Grab them by the pussy" sexual assault comments got so blown up even Republicans distance themselves from Trump at that moment.
- Trump locking kids in cages caused tons of feedback and even got trump to sign a faux executive order to "reverse" the decision, but not really
- Trump embezzling money has been called out many times, most recently over that Air Force who stayed in a Trump property that was on the other side of England and made no sense to stay at, other than to line Trump's pockets.

Everything you mentioned had strong and loud feedback from democrats, the reason that there wasn't impeachment over these things is because they were not believed to be impeachable offenses.

The reason the impeachment came from the attempted extortion of Ukraine to try to force a foreign government to interfere in the next election, by withholding promised military aide while being under attack by Russia, is because that's something that the democrats believe falls under "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors."

In all of the people who testified under oath, none of them put any real credence to these Biden claims were legitimate. Also include the fact that this wasn't an attempt to set up a general corruption task force in Ukraine, but a specific quid pro quo by Trump to help his re-election. As it was shown in all of the testimony that this was not some bigger idea by Trump to look into all possible corruption in Ukraine, but purely abusing the power of his office to withhold money desperately needed by an ally who's under attack by an enemy of the US, to attack a domestic political opponent.

iodineMight have been a bad move on Pelosi's part. The impeachment will die in Senate, Trump will surely get acquitted, and we may even see a situation like 1999, where Clinton regained immense support after being voted to be impeached. Wouldn't surprise me if Trump wins in 2020 due to this.

I was young and some of you weren't even around yet, but let's keep some context when it comes to Clinton, and for that matter Johnson as well, compared to this shit

mustardoverlorddoug henwood also explained my feelings (pretty much) in more detail here:

https://jacobinmag.com/2019/12/impeachment-donald-trump-nancy-pelosi-democratic-party

I read this article, and find it surprisingly good. Agreed, pretty much, with it all, did lots of nodding. I had literally almost forgotten that the Democratic party never has a plan for how to win, and the present is no different.

He makes an interesting point near the end, saying that it is at least conceivable to think that.. after being impeached and exonerated, he could WIN AGAIN in 2020, and potentially even be impeached a second time.

I would add a bookend to that, though. If a President can be impeached, and then re-elected, I think it's officially time to burn the whole system down and rebuild it from scratch, because I don't think that's how it's supposed to work. (And we already know much of the system is broken - so this isn't like news, but more of a reminder.)

Gonna also read the twin article arguing from the other side. Thanks again.
