Good evening fellow competitive TF2 gamers.
As I am sure many of you are now aware, the main North American Competitive Team Fortress 2 Gaming League (RGL.gg) has recently released an article clarifying changes to its ruleset regarding the detection and punishment of the naughty cheaters who are ruining our gameplay experience.
However, the cheating ruleset includes the use of hearing aids as a bannable offence - even going as far as to include it in the same brazen categories of injecting external programs for Aim Assistance, Wallhacking and Fake Lagging amongst other advantages - and will ban players for a period of one year if caught!
This troubles me however as a certified Hearing Impaired Individual - having profound hearing loss in my right ear since birth, I am dependent upon a hearing aid in order to go about my daily life, in order to better position the sources of sounds around me - since I hear completely in mono unaided by my prescribed device, this is impossible for me to achieve without my aid.
RGL's clarification article has only raised further questions for myself, and now I (and possibly many other Disabled Competitive TF2 Players) am in need of clarification. Does the "hearing aid" ban limit itself to only software-based tweaking; be it through external programs or one's sound card/headphone configuration, or does it includes such items as personal hearing aids prescribed by their healthcare provider?
Should it be the case that the latter is true, this is problematic to say the least. A league's admin team which has taken it upon themselves to stamp out toxicity and bad behaviour within its player base would then be in itself discriminating against some of the most vulnerable members of our global community - the disabled!
I hope to gain the opinions of fellow gamers suffering throughout their daily lives with similar disabilities to my own. What could be next if this discriminatory league procedure is indeed true (something I sincerely hope to not be the case)? Banning sufferers of ADD and AD/HD from consuming adderall and related medications to deal with their concentration issues? Banning depressed users from taking their meds 48 hours before officials and league-sanctioned scrims? Sigafoo-mandated drug tests at LAN events (assuming any will take place in NA in the future)?
I hope my North American brothers and sisters will join me in a chorus of solidarity against the oppression of the downtrodden in our community. Suffering through their afflictions in their daily IRL lives only to be further chased by such demons in their personal time? A sad state of affairs indeed.
I urge the RGL premiership to please clarify this stance so your community can respond as appropriate. I apologise for any false alarms if this discriminatory policy is untrue; I only ask you to please update your ruleset and/or your blog post as you see fit to make sure that such misunderstandings do not happen again.

i haven’t read the exact quote from the rules this is referencing but to my knowledge you can modify spy decloaks and uber sizzles to make other louder noises from the game, and this may be the “hearing aids” they are referring to, as I can’t discern any competitive advantage a hearing aid would give you. That said, I’m not even sure if you can do that anymore, and this game on full volume is the loudest sound known to man, so do you really need them in the first place? /s

It isn't pretty obvious to me, there is little context surrounding the actual "hearing aid" parts of the article, I was simply looking for clarification on the matter. Audio ducking (as used by Highlander Head Admin Exa in the past) has seemingly been brought under the umbrella of "hearing aids" but there's a whole lot of implicature in the hearing aid section of the post and not much in the way of clear-cut language. I am simply concerned about the matter and would appreciate clarification - I cannot simply make my deaf ear not be deaf after all!

wouldn't be the first time RGL discriminated against the disabled... my friend who is a double hand amputee was banned recently because he was using a program to counteract his lack of hands to aim for him. really scummy of RGL to ban him when he was just trying to play the game like everybody else :(

It would appear since the publishing of this open letter, the Recharge Gaming League Anti-Cheat Team has made a few vital changes to the wording of their article!!!
As can be seen in the updated ruleset, clarification has been added to remove the threatening and discriminatory language which affected disabled members of the community such as myself and many, many others.
I thank everyone who brought this to the attention of our League Administrators, this fight could not have been won without your support.
