What a coincidence that all the shitty open players can't help but hate on another game.
Anyone hating on this, seriously, open your mind a little. If the game has such a "low skill cap" you should go enter the next tournament and win $400k.

I'm pretty sure that half of those players would bait the fuck out of anybody in open.
And beat them in DM.
You may have been watching, and you may have noticed they constantly bait, they constantly turn corners, they pretty much manipulate their hitboxes as much as you can in that game. Basically, they have pretty good dm for a game with a rather simplistic design.
Waffleb IS right. The reason aim assist is on is because of consoles (iirc the aim assist doesn't exist in the pc version) peripherals. The game has high-damage, low health because it creates faster play*. The game looks like CS because it's not a stylized shooter.
*I seem to remember you guys bitch about tf2 being too slow paced to be a good esport. Get fucked.

The CoD community may be pretty silly, yeah, but these guys are getting hundreds of thousands of dollars for something they're passionate about, and they're putting on a good show while doing it. Doesn't seem all that bad.

Waffleb, this game may be the best CoD game since 4/5, but it doesn't make for a competitive game at all. Why? Mainly because they allow kill streaks, perks and attachments. CoD4's comp. scene would not have been successful if those 3 things were allowed, I can guarantee that. There's also the fact that there's nearly no recoil, a broken melee system, equipment other than nades/flash/smoke and imbalance between weapon types. This game has essentially no skill curve. If you can point and click, you win.
KaeyelAFAIK, pretty much all modern console FPS games have aim assist. I've never seen an option to turn it off either.
MW3 and BO2 you can on console, just no one actually does. I'm sure you can guess why.

mhave you ever talked to cod players?
its incredible, every single one i talk to thinks he/she is amazing at the game
i dont understand how its possible
Because that's literally how the game was designed. CoD4+ clearly isn't designed with competitive play in mind, it's made so that people who have never played the game before can pick up a control and get kills.
I think what's funnier about talking to those people is not that they think they're amazing, but if you watch them play they get mad at every single thing that happens. I wish I had recorded my roommate freshman year, it was almost not stop complaining about how unbalanced and retarded the game was, yet he pumped more hours into it than I did TF2. Same with my roommates last year, they played a lot and, while slightly more calm, I can't even think of a time where they played a match and didn't rage about something.

CoD, just like LoL, is built in a way that even if you're a piece of shit, you feel like you're still contributing to your team. And guess what, they both have huge competitive scenes just because everyone wants to be pro one day and because it isn't extremely hard to be good at either games.

its not really about the skill cap being low obviously if anyone could be good at it there wouldnt be a top end of the scene, its just that taking out the precision aim factor makes it a lot less exciting to watch (well thats the problem with it for me anyway)
positioning, timing, all that stuff is obviously not affected by control schemes but half the reason i like watching pro cs is the ridiculous shots people hit, i've watched some pro cod just to check it out and it seems like its pretty common to see slow motion replays of someone getting sprayed in the knees until they die
i very much doubt i could spray/track with thumbsticks and be anywhere near that accurate but that doesnt mean its as exciting to watch as someone hitting a sick 1deag or acing an eco with 4 sprayed headshots in 1 clip

I remember playing CoD once on console. I was about to shoot an enemy from across the map when someone else on the enemy team ran past right in front of me. Aim assist was all "OH YOU WANT TO SHOOT THAT GUY RIGHT?" and it dragged my crosshairs halfway across the screen and I missed the shot.
Features like that are great for competitive game.

my favorite is when the cod players found it and thumbs-downed it to hell, and calling the videomaker a virgin. I do agree that game makers who get behind competitive esports is a huge plus for the rest of esports, but as anyone might notice defining an ultimate level of skill to be competitive for a mainstream game influences people to play longer and buy the dee ell cees but not to encourage them to look into the competitive scene for other games.
As the developers might put it

I think it's an awful way to introduce esports to a new medium as it could set an awful precendence in front of the real challenging games but is still a good example for the naysayers who define esports to be a childish medium.

This has probably been said before, but couple of facts why I can't take CoD as a serious competitive game:
1) Players use a goddamn xbox controller! How can you say anyone is good at the game when they use something that is clunky, often requires aim assist and slows down your reflexes compared to mouse & keyboard.
2) From what I have seen, players use killstreaks. In a cometitive game there should never be an ability to, almost with no effort, instantly kill a player with a Tomahawk missile.
3) You have health regen. This may not bother someone, but to me hp regen in an e-sport game feels cheap.

I think CoD is fine if you just wanna shoot at 12 year olds, just waste time, or play with friends, but I don't think its good as a competitive fps.

On the topic of health regen, that's not really even a problem. TF2 has health packs/lockers, so you still "regen" health in a sense. But there's a risk to it in the sense that you actually have to work to get your HP back. If CoD had something such as 2x or 3x the time to regen health, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

May we never forget one of the two CoD games to ever have a good & fun competitive scene.

Now that everyone's bringing up old CoD's...
Can someone enlighten to those that haven't played the CoD's before 4 as to what the main differences were? Other than theme, of course.
I just realized all the songs in Beware of Sharks is from DJ Max...

Better weapon balance, better maps (balance, structure, variety), guns have recoil, the game wasn't made to be super easy or to make the game easier for newer players, there's an actual skill curve, the melee system actually works, there's not really anything overpowered, simplicity with kill streaks (3 instead of like 16), and the game was more focused on who can aim better and position themselves better, not who can out gay each other with equipment or who can get the most kills with a kill streak that's overpowered.
This is mostly about CoD4/5 as some of these things don't apply to older games such as CoD2, like kill streaks and perks.

You definitely can't bhop in CoD4. The most you can do with movement that's out of the ordinary is hitting a bounce. It's similar to bhopping only in the sense that it exploits a bug in the engine. To bounce, you need either 125, 250 or 333 FPS. With 125 FPS, you can only hit the short distance bounces. 250 for short (depending on which ones, some of them you end up going too far at the area you need to jump from) and medium. 333 FPS for the ridiculous bounces. 333 FPS is/was actually banned from being used in CoD4's competitive scene because the major advantage you get in jump distance. That includes jumping in general and bounces.
It's kind of crazy that they would ban using a certain amount of FPS but it makes sense I guess.

Another thing in CoD is that you can oneshot somebody with a sniper rifle(or so I've seen) even if it's just a bodyshot. It doesn't "charge" up like in TF2, it's really just a quickscope bodyshot insta-kill really. Shouldn't headshots be the instant-kill? It's ridiculous how not only do you have aim assist, but with a sniper rifle that can oneshot with a bodyshot...
