I'm not sure what you were reading but that definitely wasn't what I was arguing here.

R3VoltI remember heading onto Jaeger's site a long time ago:
Given the insanse response to Lopert's Uber Timing Script and the discussion it spawned I've suspended all work on Tips & Tricks, Match Comms, and Demo releases probably indefinetly. This community disgusts me sometimes.
I believe noid said it best:
This is why you can't have nice things.
love, noid
Just a little thought. I do find it absurd that you could complain about a free documentary created on someone's spare time. I find it perfectly fine for eXtv/Luckyluke to get some revenue forthis, he does deserve it of course.
Nobody in this thread has disagreed with this, it was more how eXtv went about getting this revenue that caused an issue.
Anyways I made the point I wanted to make. Wasn't trying to attack eXtv personally, I just hope you're aware that you aren't always as open with the community as I think you could be, and while this issue was raised over a small matter, I think it's important to address because it could prevent any potential conflict between eXtv and members of the community on future projects.
SalamancerWell I'm a bit confused at the notion that we're pretending anything, or trying to slip anything under the table. Luke and the rest of eXtv volunteered our time for this project. A few days ago, we saw the opportunity to add an optional price tag, so we did.
Perhaps this confusion is a result of differing perspectives regarding youtube as a form of viewing the documentary. I'm sure a lot of people are perfectly happy to watch it in compressed-quality, and couldn't care less about the higher framerate and slight quality increase of the downloadable version. Others however (a small minority) probably feel that handing out a youtube version is like advertising a free amusement park and then on opening day having only a single ride available, and if you want to experience the full park you must pay for it. Perhaps I'm just extra-picky over things like that because I edit videos myself.
Renhet2sy_morphiendBut in case you need a fucking dictionary ground up and snorted into your skull, "volunteer" is pretty much a position that is mutually exclusive with "getting paid for the fucking job." If eXtv had said, hey guys give us some cash so luke can focus on this project, I probably would have actually applauded them for admitting that they needed assistance on this and that one guy working in his free time on a project (that evidently had loftier and loftier aspirations set for it internally while the rest of the community basically just wanted anything) of this magnitude was laughable from minute one. The joke here is that it is now a purchasable product and apparently the defense for it from Sal (who I've personally come to find adorable how jumpy and defensive he gets when anyone questions this project) is that "we never confirmed/denied that it was actually volunteer work."It was a volunteer job, and everyone gets their free 1080p stream. You still get the whole thing for free, there's just an optional 50fps version for $5.
and apparently dellort's words even regardless of his defense of the validity of my claim confirm that I was not the only person that was under the impression that this was a volunteer job.
He volunteered, everyone gets a free product, nothing shady happened. The end.
I'm starting to repeat myself I think but something shady did happen, and while the $5 fee really isn't a big deal and probably not worth arguing over, it's more the principle behind it that's an issue. eXtv has a habit of hiding small issues from the public community, and trying to pass them off later as something that they had already stated or intended from the start. This is a very supportive and forgiving community, being more open about the need for help or admitting to small mistakes would benefit everyone in the long run, and I'm sure if Sal/Luke had posted in this thread straight up saying "I know this was meant to be a community contribution, but it looks like Luke could use some financial help so we're opening up a donation account for him" people would've been more than willing to donate. If it had been handled in that manner I would at least have no issue with it, and would instead be defending eXtv as opposed to defending June (for the record I hate his hyper-aggressive/hateful posts but he does sometimes raise valid points which get ignored).
SalamancerI'm just using the Wikipedia definition of flamebait. Someone correct me if I'm misusing the word.
I don't speak for eXtine or Luke, but when the suggestion was made a few days ago to put down a payment option, I was all for it. It gives an easy, direct way for anyone who wants to support the production to donate. Not wanting to support the production isn't something anyone should look down on, either - we are indeed offering the final product for free on YouTube. The only difference between the two will be release day and framerate. If either of those differences is cause for concern, as it seems they may be for gr8stalin, then by all means tell us. It's like I said before - if the majority of the most loyal TF2 fans think we're doing this the wrong way, we can probably still change it.
So far, it doesn't seem like a majority. It seems like one person with no vested interest in the subject (June) wandering into a thread just to sperg.
Did you consider just opening up a donation account towards LuckyLuke to reward all of his work on the documentary? To me this seems like a better option in every sense as it's not misdirecting the community (even if it was only a small matter), and allowing those who truly feel they should get the full quality download without paying to do so. Of course there's no guarantee that Luke would make as much money from this option, but given the past record of genorousity from this community I would be confident in saying he would've actually ended up with more profit through this option.
gr8stalinAlso dismissing someone's posts as "flamebait" just so you don't have to give someone you don't like a valid response considering how big this project is supposed to be is a really childish and egotistical thing to do, especially here given how small the actively posting community is.
This is the main issue I have. I respect eXtv as an organization and genuinely appreciate all the work they do for the tf2 community, but it's becoming a repeated event that they aren't open to the community about an issue and then try to cover it up at the last minute with something along the lines of "well we never said you wouldn't have to pay for it." Generally the community lets these sorts of things go, in this case it's not a big deal because the fee is only $5, but would everyone react the same way if it had been set at $30? It's just a flaw in their management/community interaction which I wish they would fix.
LuckyLukeGoat_How long will it be?
What types of payment?
What type of distribution? (download via vhx?)
About 35 minutes. I believe VHX supports Paypal, Amazon and Credit card. Straight download yes, multiple qualities / filesizes. and YouTube. ;)
dellortSalamancer#143 Perhaps you could dig up some quotes from me, Luke, or eXtine backing that up. I'd appreciate it.
Not that I have any issue with Luke charging a small cost for the full quality download, but June is correct that this was initially proposed as a "community contribution" and that Luke was volunteering his time to edit it. I'd rather you just straight up say Luke needs/wants some financial benefit for all his time instead of suggesting that you had implied there would be a cost at the start of the project. I will be buying a copy of this to support Luke however I do think June is entitled to complain about the cost which was not forewarned.
The VHX version isn't much different from YouTube. YouTube will also be 1080p, but then 25fps. We didn't shoot it on a RED camera or something. The main reason to buy it would be to support us! If you don't want to buy it but just watch on YouTube, that's cool too. I never considered it a paid job, I've pretty much done everything in my free time. Didn't even know we'd be able to sell it until a couple days ago.
Again, I have no issue with the payment option personally, I just think June is entitled to complain about it if he so chooses. It seems that it is easier to mark his posts as "flamebait" than it is to accept he has a valid point.
I'll still be around if you want any help with organizing anything related to the jumping/surfing (players, what maps would be good to showcase, etc.). I can also help in making those pre-segment videos to play before each event, unless you were thinking of just finding existing videos to play.

truktrukVirulenceRadmanI think the absolute biggest thing fighting games (and rts and mobas) have over TF2 is the viewers perspective. When we're forced to watch only one persons POV in a TF2 match, youre forcing the viewer to fill in all the blanks with their own game knowledge, which is kind of unwieldy for casual viewing.Nailed it. Unless you're already familiar with the environment the players are playing in, people are going to be lost. A fighting game is usually a 2D plane with two characters fighting. A top-down game RTS style game using actual terrain like DotA/StarCraft is easy enough to grasp. A sports match like basketball and soccer not only has a huge fanbase, but they're also viewed from a bird's-eye perspective.
Capturing the action of, say, a roamer bombing into a team to cause a distraction for Scouts to clean up, or a split push in CS:GO is maddening when trying to grab it all live with one camera angle to work with. Switching angles rapidly is disorienting to spectate, and even worse for newer viewers.
Solving this would be really complicated, I'd imagine. Accessibility is murder with first-person team games.
I was thinking if it was possible to have set points on the map we could bind to keys. For example, at mid fights, instead of pressing spacebar then manually flying to a good midfight angle, you simply could press a keybind to go to a specific spot that views the mid fight from a good angle (same would go for cps 1 and 2.) I never mentioned it to anyone because it seems impossible to do, but if it is possible I think it would enhance the viewing experience especially when fights in certain areas last a very long time.
So yeah if anyone is bold enough to attempt to figure something like this out, please give it a try!
If you're in spectate I think the getpos and setpos commands work (probably what Comedian is thinking of). You would just have to set up binds to different keys in the format "bind "x" "setpos xxxx.xxx.xxx.xx.xxx". This number can be found by going to the desired position and using the "getpos" command. The positions of each point would be different on each map, so the best option would probably be to create a .cfg of each map and just execute that at the start.
These aren't in-game moments but whenever I've had my movies played on larger streams (extv and tip of the hats) it's pretty cool to watch all the comments coming out of the chat window. As far as in-game moments the only one I can distinctly remember was actually in a pub arena game when I was still fairly new to tf2 (so I think back in 2008/2009). It was 16vs16 and I managed to get all 16 kills against the enemy team as a scout. That may have also been the moment I decided competitive tf2 might be a good option aha.
You can always highlight the part you want to preview then hit space to do a ram preview. It's slow but it should be very smooth.
Found a soldier duo thanks.
