Pretty sure Anders Breivik (killed 60 or so kids in a shooting in Norway a few years ago) had to go through extremely extensive planning in order to get a hand on a gun without autorities reacting, and it still was only a semi-automatic hunting rifle. Gun control plays a huge part is how easy this is to pull off and I'd argue it's one of the main reasons this happens in the US way more than in the rest of the world.
