Maybe they could make a "demo viewer" beta version based on a pre-2015 version with all functions removed but playing demos? They did this same thing with CSGO for pre-2013 demos.

A few members of my clan formed an HL team in early 2012. I watched them a couple of times.
Another person from this clan (may have been on the team, I can't remember) said I should watch the ESEA S10 LAN. I liked what I saw, went to Newbie Mixes, played in Steel for a season and finally made it to Open years later.
